As a member of the military, Anesthesiologists belong to the Medical Specialist occupation in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and provide specialized emergent resuscitative and anesthesia care for CAF members, whether in Canadian Forces Health Services domestic clinics/operating theaters or deployed in support of international operations. They have the opportunity to be leaders within CAF Health Services and serve as mentors and educators to a wide range of military healthcare providers.
Their primary responsibilities include:
Anesthesiologists in the CAF maintain clinical readiness by working embedded as staff in tertiary civilian hospitals across Canada, collaborating with civilian colleagues. They may also provide consultative services at Canadian Forces Health Services Clinics, participate in education, training, research, and deploy to support domestic and international operations as part of a Health Services team.
Members of the Regular Force are assigned to a base after training, with potential relocations during their career. Primary Reserve Force members serve part-time with a specific Reserve unit, working approximately one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.
