Job summary

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is seeking an Anesthesia Assistant to support the surgical program. The AA may be an RN or RRT who has completed a postgraduate anesthesia assistant diploma and will assist anesthesiologists in the block room, inductions, and various sedation scenarios.

The role requires completion of the specified anesthesia assistance training and adherence to department standards. Hourly pay is governed by the applicable collective agreement and reflects the RN/ RRT

Qualifications

• Education and licensure requirements as listed: RN or RRT with appropriate certifications and a diploma/certificate in anesthesia assistance.
• Basic computer skills required.
• BLS required; ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide anesthetic care under supervision in the operating room.
• Assist in block room, inductions, and sedation for procedures.
• Support acute pain service and intraoperative procedures.
• Follow scope of practice per department standards and physician supervision.

Job Summary & Requirements

RVH has the largest surgical program in North Simcoe Muskoka with 65% of surgeons and approximately 80,000 surgical cases annually.

Anesthesia Assistants (AA) are health care professionals, either RN or RRT that are specially trained to provide anesthetic care to stable surgical patients under supervision and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist. This role is an expanded role of the RN and RRT and requires completion of a postgraduate (diploma) anesthesia assistant training program. The AA will provide technical and clinical assistance to the anesthesiologist. This will include assistance in the block room, inductions within the OR, sedation for endoscopic procedures, sedation for cataract surgery and assistance with Acute Pain Service.
The scope of practice of the AA is defined by their own professional standards and by the Chief, Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Supervising Anesthesiologists within the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine are responsible in delegating tasks that are consistent with these defined roles and practice scope.

Qualifications for this position
Education:

• Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent
• Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Competence essential or
• Registered Respiratory Therapist who is a Graduate of a recognized course in Respiratory Therapy with registered status and holds a current Certificate from the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario and registered with the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care
• BLS Certificate within one (1) year essential

Current hourly rate range: $53.43 - $66.05
