Job summary

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is seeking an Anesthesia Assistant to join the Surgical Program's Anesthesia Care Team. The AA role involves providing anesthetic care to stable surgical patients under supervision and with anesthesiologist availability.

The position expands the traditional RN/RRT scope and requires completion of a postgraduate anesthesia assistant program.

Qualifications

• Education requirements as listed in the posting.
• RN or RRT background with relevant certification.
• BLS within 1 year; ACLS preferred.
• Completion of Anesthesia Assistant graduate certificate program.
• Advanced practice skills and life-support capabilities.
• Knowledge of narcotic epidural boluses, ventilation, pain management, intubation and extubation.

Responsibilities

• Provide anesthetic care to stable surgical patients under supervision and with immediate availability of an anesthesiologist.
• Assist in block room, inductions in the OR, and sedation for procedures including endoscopies and cataracts; support Acute Pain Service.
• Role is defined by professional standards and by supervising anesthesiologists coordinating delegated tasks.

Education

Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent

Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Competence

Registered Respiratory Therapist who is a Graduate of a recognized course in Respiratory Therapy with registered status and holds a current Certificate from the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario and registered with the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care

BLS Certificate within one (1) year essential

ACLS- preferred

Job Summary & Requirements

RVH has the largest surgical program in North Simcoe Muskoka with 65% of surgeons and approximately 80,000 surgical cases annually.

Anesthesia Assistants (AA) are health care professionals, either RN or RRT that are specially trained to provide anesthetic care to stable surgical patients under supervision and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist. This role is an expanded role of the RN and RRT and requires completion of a postgraduate (diploma) anesthesia assistant training program. The AA will provide technical and clinical assistance to the anesthesiologist. This will include assistance in the block room, inductions within the OR, sedation for endoscopic procedures, sedation for cataract surgery and assistance with Acute Pain Service.
The scope of practice of the AA is defined by their own professional standards and by the Chief, Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Supervising Anesthesiologists within the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine are responsible in delegating tasks that are consistent with these defined roles and practice scope.

Rate of Pay: As per the applicable collective agreement. The successful candidate will be compensated in accordance with either the ONA or ONA HCP collective agreement, based on bargaining unit affiliation.

Current hourly rate range: $53.43 - $66.05
