Job description

CarbonCure Technologies is a fast-growing carbon utilization technology company on a mission to reduce embodied carbon in new concrete construction. With hundreds of carbon mineralization systems operating worldwide, CarbonCure’s technologies inject and permanently embed captured CO₂ in concrete while also enabling reductions of carbon-intensive cement from each truckload of concrete. This innovative solution has saved hundreds of thousands of metric tons of CO₂ to date, and that impact grows with every truckload of concrete our producer partners supply in their markets. CarbonCure’s cutting-edge research and innovation have also garnered global recognition and prestigious awards, most notably the Carbon XPRIZE Grand Prize and induction into the Cleantech 100 Hall of Fame. CarbonCure’s investors include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Blue Earth Capital, BDC, Amazon, Taronga Ventures, 2150, Microsoft, Samsung Ventures, BH3 Growth Equity, Carbon Direct, GreenSoil Investments and Mitsubishi Corporation. Our Culture

Our team is made up of energetic, entrepreneurial individuals who are passionate about driving meaningful solutions to combat climate change. Besides being dedicated to our mission, we believe in work-life balance and active involvement in our local communities. We value integrity and accountability; and our core values include customer success, earned trust, data-driven decisions, and straight-talk. Wedon’ttake ourselves too seriously, but we are here to change the world.

Purpose Driven Position

The Analytical Technician will join the CarbonCure research group to lead the laboratory analytical activities as part of a team investigating the linkage between the material science of cement and concrete and the reaction chemistry of CO2. Under the direction of the Sr. Research Engineer, the candidate will have the primary responsibility to conduct necessary analytic testing using the appropriate equipment and techniques, as a contribution to the overall success of CarbonCure.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Prepare and analyze specimens for material testing according to established procedures
  • Conduct material testing with techniques such as isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), quantitative x-ray diffraction (QXRD), Carbon Sulphur analyzer, and FTIR
  • Conduct testing following established procedures and good laboratory practices
  • Review analytical data for completeness, quality, and conformance with established acceptance criteria
  • Maintain analytical equipment in an optimal operating condition through routine calibration, verification, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Batch, mix, cast, consolidate, label, and cure concrete specimens for research and performance testing programs with attention to adhering to relevant standards
  • Measure and document fresh-concrete properties and hardened properties of concrete
  • Compile, interpret, and present results using defined technical reporting formats
  • Author standard operating procedures and training for laboratory users
  • Assist in performing and interpreting the results for bench top laboratory experiments aimed at understanding the behavior of cement with CO2
  • Independently perform and validate carbonation-potential studies on construction materials based on experimental design, laboratory testing, and data analysis
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the concrete laboratory and the analytical laboratory
  • Comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures appropriate for the laboratory
What You Need to Succeed
  • A university degree in chemistry, materials science, civil, environmental, or chemical engineering, or related discipline
  • Knowledge of cement chemistry, cement hydration, cement-admixture interactions, concrete properties, and concrete performance
  • Familiarity with concrete materials, including cement, supplementary cementitious materials, aggregates, and chemical admixtures; experience with concrete mixing, specimen preparation, curing, and testing is an asset
  • Experience preparing samples, conducting tests, compiling results, and interpreting data according to established procedures
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), quantitative x-ray analysis (QXRD), Carbon Sulphur analyzer, FTIR, and related laboratory information-management systems
  • Familiarity with collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence
  • Strong written communication skills, including preparation of technical reports, SOPs, work instructions, and presentation materials
  • A creative and practical mindset, with the ability to translate new process concepts into testable experiments and assess their technical feasibility
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in an interdisciplinary, fast-paced research environment
