Job Description Role: Analytical Studies - Substations Growth and Sustainment Department

Location of Services:

Work from home - fully remote in British Columbia

Work Assignment Overview:

Hire a consultant with the Analytical Studies Team in the Substations Growth and Sustainment Department.

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time assignment with 2 days/week - the days/hours will be confirmed by the manager.

Compensation:

  • Max T4 Rate: $103.95
  • Max INC Rate: $125.78

Duration:

19-May-2025 to 29-May-2026

Experience and Role Accountabilities:

  1. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
  2. Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments for BC Hydro projects and operations.
  3. Meet safety, cost, quality, and time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, and coordinating work schedules.
  4. Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, and recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion at BC Hydro.
  5. Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, and providing guidance to other engineering professionals.
  6. Deliver exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders, defining scope, establishing design criteria, approving technical documentation, and reporting on work progress.
  7. Make complex technical decisions and recommendations, including establishing design bases and criteria, and managing engineering resources for major projects.

Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities:

  1. Experience with design of electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV.
  2. Assist with increasing workload in capital projects, emergency replacements, asset management, and review work.
  3. Prepare project documentation and deliverables according to BC Hydro standards.
  4. Design electrical systems related to Transmission Stations, including ground grid, site layout, control, and equipment supports.
  5. Perform engineering calculations such as short-circuit forces, ampacity, and lightning protection.

Additional Education and Skills:

  • Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers.
  • Manage design tasks including scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Find engineering solutions that add value and reach consensus.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written in English.
  • Experience in project management, estimating, and cost control.

Specialized Skills:

  • Engagement in electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies for electrical utility systems.
  • Perform EMT studies such as transformer energization, harmonics analysis, and interconnection studies.
  • Model renewable energy inverter-based resources in PSCAD, including BESS, wind, and solar PV systems.
  • Support planning and other BC Hydro groups with modeling and analysis.
