This is an opportunity to support the growing and dynamic business of the preeminent insurance law firm. The work environment is collegial and professional. As a member of the Office of the General Counsel, you will work closely with Firm lawyers, the Business Acceptance Unit, and other departments within the Firm around the globe to identify and navigate possible legal and commercial conflicts of interest. This position is critical to identifying potential risk, communicating potential resolution, and securing the necessary approvals as part of the business intake and new hire process. The ideal candidate possesses strong written and communication skills, exceptional research abilities, works well under pressure, enjoys collaboration and being part of a team, and is a proven problem-solver. The position demands strong and reasoned judgment, sound decision-making skills, and an orientation towards service and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise Firm lawyers and staff regarding conflict-of-interest issues associated with new matters and lateral lawyer / paralegal candidates.
  • Educate Firm lawyers and staff regarding policies and procedures relating to conflicts and business intake issues.
  • Assist department leadership in the coordination of daily workflow to ensure that performance of staff is meeting the needs of the lawyers.
  • Assist department leadership in establishing new methods and standards for searching and analysis of all conflicts of interest searches performed by the department, monitoring for consistency, accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Support training of new hires.
  • Draft and review engagement letters, conflict waiver letters, and ethical wall memoranda.
  • Communicate directly with Firm lawyers and clients to draft and negotiate engagement letters and conflict waiver letters.
  • Support Firm's Business Acceptance Unit.
  • Assist department leadership as needed.
  • Keep abreast and informed of current rules, law and business issues that may impact Firm lawyers.
  • Have substantive knowledge of Rules of Professional Conduct, regulatory schemes governing lawyers across Canadian provinces and legal ethics issues.
  • Available to address Firm's global needs across multiple time zones - including evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as necessitated by the business.
  • Law degree from an accredited University in Canada or other relevant combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of law firm experience, specifically in conflicts, risk management or insurance.
  • Experience in conflicts identification and clearance.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in both English and French, verbally and in writing.
  • Active bar license in good standing in a province where Clyde & Co Canada LLP maintains an office, i.e. Montreal (Quebec), Calgary (Alberta), Toronto (Ontario) or Vancouver (British Columbia) would be an asset.
