The Analyst, Finance & Planning is responsible for a range of financial activities that support assigned business units in preparing annual budgets, and managing ongoing financial planning and reporting. This role also includes preparing components of financial reports for the Ministry and other funding agencies, such as statements, supporting schedules, and both statutory and management reports.
The Analyst analyzes and presents financial summaries for their program areas, offering recommendations and highlighting key issues for consideration. They serve as the primary financial contact for business units, addressing inquiries and concerns, while also supporting the Team Lead, Finance & Planning as needed.
Here is what you will be doing:
Supports the preparation and development of the annual program budget for assigned areas, ensuring business leaders are engaged and deadlines are met
Meets regularly with program contacts to review monthly financial results and prepare forecasts, cost allocations, and accruals
Prepares scheduled financial reports to fulfill Ministry and other funding agencies’ requirements
Conducts financial analyses to support internal decision-making
Guides business units through the annual budgeting cycle by providing necessary data and generating relevant reports
Identifies budget variances and collaborates with business leaders to explain or resolve discrepancies
Trains business unit leaders on the use of finance tools, templates, and reporting processes
Highlights and explains budget or forecast variances to the Team Lead, Finance & Planning, emphasizing key issues
Maintains clear, consistent communication and fosters high-quality interactions with business units and the Finance team to interpret financial results
Applies professional skepticism to potential fraud risks, adheres to internal controls, and reports any suspected fraud or control gaps to management
Here is what you will need to be successful:
Education and Experience
Undergraduate degree in business administration, finance or equivalent subject
Achieved or working towards a CPA designation
1-2 years relevant work experience
Experience in providing financial analysis and presentations is an asset
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, pivot tables and formulas
Experience with other MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Knowledge and Skills
Current knowledge of accounting principles, methodology and standards
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Demonstrates sound judgment with the ability to multitask and work independently under tight deadlines
Highly detail-oriented and precise
Skilled in organization, interpersonal relations, and both written and verbal communication
Collaborative team player with a proven ability to build strong working relationships
Committed to continuous process improvement
Takes initiative and embraces new challenges
