Job summary

Altus Group is seeking a Cost Analyst for the Development Advisory unit in its downtown Toronto office. You will provide technical support for cost consulting, perform quantity takeoffs, and engage with multiple sectors including residential, rail, and commercial.

Ideal candidates have 1–2 years in cost estimating, strong teamwork, and proficiency with CAD/Excel, CostX, and BlueBeam, plus a solid understanding of project pricing and market benchmarking.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Civil/Structural Engineering or Building Science.
  • 1-2 years of experience in cost consulting, quantity surveying or cost estimating is an asset.
  • Knowledge of construction industry including development, contracting and consulting sectors.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills (written & verbal).
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and estimates.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior staff with pre-contract activities, including estimate developments from concept to pre-tender stage.
  • Support market benchmarking and escalation cost analyses.
  • Prepare takeoffs for architectural, structural, civil, landscaping, etc., using CostX/BlueBeam.
  • Collaborate with project team to meet financial, time, and resource goals.
  • Conduct site visits and estimating reports; input/reconcile cost budgets.
  • Research local suppliers/prices and update cost databases; support process improvements.
  • Coordinate with internal/external partners to prepare proposals/reports.

Job description

Compensation Range: $55,000- $75,000 Compensation Disclaimer: The salary range listed reflects the base pay for this role at Altus Group and is provided where required by local regulations. Actual offers may differ based on experience, market conditions, and other relevant factors. The range does not include additional compensation such as bonuses, equity, benefits, or other incentives.

The Opportunity: Altus Group is currently seeking a Cost Analyst for our Development Advisory business unit, based out of our downtown Toronto office. The Analyst will provide technical support for a variety of cost consulting services to new and existing clients as directed by senior staff members, completing quantity surveying tasks such as project statistics, measuring quantities, reaching out to the market for pricing etc. This role will have the opportunity to be exposed to various sectors, including residential, rail, road, highway, aviation, commercial, institutional and industrial projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting senior staff to service clients in all pre-contract activities, comprising estimate developments from concept stage through to pre-tender stage, helping with market benchmarking, escalation cost, etc.
  • Escalate issues to the next level of management as required.
  • Assist with construction estimating (quantity takeoffs) for architectural, structural, civil, landscaping, etc. using onscreen takeoff software (CostX, BlueBeam, etc.)
  • Participating with the project team to achieve the goals within the parameters set for financial, time and people resources.
  • Undertaking and completing site visits & estimating reports.
  • Inputting/reconciling construction cost/budget reports.
  • Researching local suppliers and trades and updating database on prices/quotes.
  • Assisting in the implementation of initiatives for continuous process improvement to increase efficiency & effectiveness.
  • Collaborating with various internal/external partners to obtain the necessary information to prepare proposals/reports.
Key Requirements
  • Degree or Diploma in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Civil/Structural Engineering or Building Science.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a similar role in cost consulting, quantity surveying or cost estimating is an asset.
  • Basic understanding of the construction industry including development, contracting and consulting sectors.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills (interpersonal, written & verbal).
  • Understanding of construction schedules and strong ability to work within defined deadlines.
  • Ability to maximize the use of appropriate software and technology, such as CAD, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience working with take-off programs, such as CostX, is an asset.
  • Candidates understands construction methodology, site safety, the CIQS standard method of measurement (elemental/trade), provincial lien act, and standard contract conditions (CCDC).
  • Understanding of general contract vs. construction management forms and ability to interpret and take-off architectural and structural drawings.
