We are looking for a Analyst 2 - Food Microbiology in 4606 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. V5G 1K5 CAN. Your mission will be to:
Position Summary
Perform basic to advanced microbiological analyses using a variety of laboratory techniques. Prepare and analyze samples following simple to complex analytical testing procedures. Direct junior staff. Troubleshoot routine and non-routine issues.
Qualifications Required
- Post-secondary education and at least 3 to 5 years’ experience working in a Microbiology laboratory
- Proven success in the role of an Analyst 1
- Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking, and priority setting skills
- Basic understanding of computer use
- Well organized with good attention to detail
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, shows ability to deal with diverse personalities
- Able to learn quickly and be adaptable
- Competent with LIMS worksheet module and advanced functions as required for position; able to export data from instruments to LIMS; able to teach and instruct others in LIMS use
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Reading, recording, and interpretation of results. Data entry into LIMS, worksheet approval and validation for all routine analyses, basic and advanced
- Take the lead in the continuous improvement activities in the laboratory including the identification and resolution of issues related to sample processing, methodology, and the identification of non-routine samples for which guidance must be sought
- Recommends solutions which will make the lab more efficient/productive
- Perform and coordinate the QC activities (calibrations, periodic swabbing, air plates, etc.)
- Assist with the performance of internal and external proficiency testing
- Assist with the performance and documentation of method validations
- Maintain proficiency in all methods and procedures required for the position and maintain own training records
- Demonstrates leadership qualities by proactively providing training, technical expertise, and mentoring to junior staff with documentation; provides feedback to Supervisor/Manager on staff performance
- Participate, when requested, in internal and external audits
- Identify and communicate non-conformances to the Supervisor
- Performs advanced microbiological analyses/troubleshooting in all areas of the Food and Water laboratories in strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Health & Safety policies including biohazard safety
- Manages the prioritization and coordination of sample flow to ensure regulatory and client TAT and quality expectations are met and to minimize the risk of sample mislabeling, mix-up, and cross-contamination; anticipate problems in these areas, notify senior staff, but be proactive in resolving them
- Takes the lead in building a strong team of analytical professionals

Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Fast paced, high throughput laboratory environment with changing priorities
- Requires flexible working hours, overtime, and rotational weekend/holiday work
- Expected to perform repetitive, somewhat physical work using a variety of machines and equipment
- Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE
- Lifting and carrying up to 10 kg
Travel
- Minimal occasional travel may be required
Compensation range: $24.89 - 28.05/hr
