The APMC was created in 1974 under the Petroleum Marketing Act and is an agent of the Crown working to enhance the value of Alberta’s petroleum resources. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, APMC executes on the government’s direction and currently manages: the marketing of the Crown’s royalty share of conventional crude oil; Alberta’s oil and natural gas royalty reference prices; Alberta’s stake in the Sturgeon Refinery; development of business opportunities to support and enable industry growth; execution of commercial petroleum ventures that benefit Alberta; and acts in an advisory capacity on opportunities and issues related to the petroleum industry.

APMC is an arm’s length corporation of the Government of Alberta with a team of highly professional staff dedicated to performance, accountability, and operating with a progressive, innovative lens in all we do. The commission works with industry stakeholders across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments, as well as across government organizations, to understand and assess the challenges to realizing the full value of Alberta’s resources and the opportunities to enhance that value.

The APMC is the commercial arm of the Government of Alberta, with the Business Development team responsible for exploring value-enhancing opportunities for Alberta’s resources and building new markets for oil and gas products within North America and abroad.

The Opportunity

Location : Calgary, Alberta

Mandate

We are seeking a dynamic analyst to join our team, focusing on natural gas, NGLs, and power strategic marketing analysis and business development. This role is crucial in enhancing our understanding of supply-demand economics across the natural gas and power markets. You will work closely with senior leadership to provide actionable insights that inform strategy, investment, and market engagement decisions. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of North American and global market dynamics and industry trends, excel at identifying new business opportunities, influence marketing strategies, drive revenue growth, and expand our company's presence in the energy market.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Develop and maintain models for natural gas and power supply-demand fundamentals for Alberta produced Natural Gas and NGLs.
  2. Track and analyze market drivers, including production trends, storage levels, regulatory developments, LNG flows, pipeline dynamics, power dispatch, and emissions policies.
  3. Synthesize complex data into clear insights and communicate implications for price movements, basis spreads, and infrastructure bottlenecks.
  4. Support scenario analysis, pricing forecasts, and long-term market outlooks.
  5. Prepare reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Collaborate on strategic initiatives linking natural gas and power markets with broader energy system trends.
  7. Monitor and interpret relevant data from government, industry, and commercial sources.
  8. Contribute to business proposals, presentations, and pitches to secure new contracts or partnerships.
  9. Identify and evaluate potential business opportunities, partnerships, and alliances within the energy sector to drive revenue growth.
  10. Analyze data from various sources to derive actionable insights for decision-making.
  11. Provide analytical support and collaborate with management on organizational and industry growth initiatives.

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success will be measured by the candidate’s ability to:

  1. Support leadership in developing and executing strategic plans within the natural gas and power industry.
  2. Develop and implement models to analyze market data, focusing on pricing trends, supply and demand, and regulatory changes.
  3. Identify and evaluate at least three potential business opportunities or partnerships, and develop proposals to secure contracts by year-end.
  4. Create forecasting models and scenario analyses, delivering a comprehensive report by Q4 with strategic recommendations.
  5. Enhance existing process models and implement at least two process improvements to increase efficiency in credit exposure monitoring and reporting.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, finance, or economics, with 5+ years of experience in energy market analysis, preferably in North American natural gas and/or power markets.
  • Experience: Familiarity with NGTL, AESO, or other key systems like Mainline and Alliance, with a strong understanding of Alberta’s gas and power infrastructure, including limitations and future expansions. Experience with LNG market analysis and crude oil supply/demand analysis is a plus. Strong communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and proven economic, financial modeling, and data analytics skills. Deep knowledge of oil and gas market dynamics, including supply chains, pricing, transportation, and regulation. Ability to work in a dynamic environment dealing with complex issues.
