Join the City of Medicine Hat as an Airport Labourer

Full-Time, Up to 6-12 Months, On-Site

Are you ready to be a vital part of our team at Medicine Hat Regional Airport (YXH)? We are seeking dedicated and skilled Airport Labourers to help maintain our airport facilities and ensure safety and efficiency in all operations. This is a temporary, semi-skilled unionized position where you'll have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment in a dynamic, 7-day-a-week operational environment. Candidates must be available for rotating schedules that include weekends and holidays.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and maintain airport maintenance equipment, including plow trucks, runway sweepers, snow blowers, loaders, and more.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on airport facilities and grounds, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Participate in the Airport Safety Management System (SMS) and security programs, reporting hazards and incidents promptly.
  • Assist in implementing corrective actions as needed and contribute to the Airport Emergency Response and Security Plans.
  • Control wildlife activity and maintain the grounds according to the Airport Wildlife Management Program.
  • Project a positive image of the airport through all interactions with staff, tenants, and the public.

What You Bring

  • Willingness and flexibility to work rotating and irregular shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, to support a 7-day-a-week airport operation.
  • Strong reading comprehension skills-this role includes a comprehensive training period (approximately 1 month) where you'll need to review material independently and demonstrate your understanding through written and/or computer-based tests.
  • Reliability and dependability, with the ability to manage workload in varying weather conditions.
  • The ability to learn the safe operation and routine maintenance of specialized airport equipment.
  • A working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to use various software and technologies.
  • Strong communication skills for understanding and executing instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Physical strength to lift and move heavy objects.
  • The ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and partners.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent high school diploma.
  • A valid Alberta Class 3 driver's license with airbrake endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
  • Current or ability to obtain Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
  • Ability to obtain an Airport Vehicle Operator's Permit (AVOP), Restricted Radio Operator's Certificate with Aeronautical (ROC-A), and a Restricted Area Security Pass (RASP).
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
