Job description

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

This role reports to the Research and Partners Manager, Applied Genomics Centre

SUMMARY


The Computational Biologist will play a significant leadership role in research projects within the Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) by conceptualizing, designing and building bioinformatic pipelines and protocols for applied research projects. They will also be responsible for organizing and maintaining large data sets and bioinformatic tools for the AGC. This individual will work closely with industry partners under the supervision and direction of the AGC Director. Where appropriate, they may also help supervise and train student researchers working in the AGC laboratories.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide research support and tools for the AGC Director, Faculty, and AGC senior leadership.
  • Meet with industry partners to help with project planning and design.
  • Execute bioinformatics analysis required for research projects, including quality control, and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Download sequence data from public databases and AGC’s Illumina MiSeq, ONT MinION, and iScan systems for processing and analysis.
  • Download open source bioinformatics tools and customize as needed for genomic data analysis.
  • Design custom bioinformatics scripts and tools for genomic data analysis.
  • Assist in preparing reports and presentations, collaboratively and under the direction of AGC’s senior leadership.
  • Provide on-site supervision and training to undergraduate student researchers as needed.
  • Help organize and maintain high-throughput data, bioinformatics scripts, and tools.
  • Execute laboratory experiments required for research projects, when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s in Bioinformatics or related discipline.
  • Minimum two years of demonstrated experience with NGS data analysis. Level of experience will determine pay.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and Unix/Linux systems.
  • Proficiency working with high performance computing clusters.
  • Proficiency working with Ensemble, NCBI and UCSC genome browsers, and other genomic databases.
  • Experience with metagenomics data analysis, whole genome sequencing analysis, and/or GWAS.
  • Proficiency in utilizing bioinformatics tools and pipelines such as SAMtools, BAMtools, VCFtools, Bowtie, QIIME, Mothur, DADA2.
  • Experience with long-read Nanopore data analysis is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques such as qPCR, Sanger Sequencing, NGS, or Illumina SNP arrays.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.

Anticipated hourly pay rate: $34 - $50
