This is an identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position

Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service (AWAHS) is dedicated to providing culturally sensitive care within our community. AWAHS is honoured to be part of the national Culture Care Connect (CCC) program, which connects 31 Aboriginal-controlled suicide prevention networks across Australia.

Responsibilities
  • As we expand our involvement in this important non-clinical support service, we are seeking a passionate Aftercare, Recovery and Crisis Support Worker to join our team. This role will focus on providing and delivering psychological and holistic aftercare support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals referred following a suicide attempt, crisis or mental health episode.
  • As the Aftercare Worker, you will be focused on empowering people by providing compassion, guidance, encouragement, motivation and follow-up. You will support individuals to develop skills, confidence, and knowledge to improve their wellbeing and community connections. You will deliver trauma-aware, healing-informed aftercare services and encourage individuals to engage actively with the AWAHS social emotional wellbeing team (SEWB) to maximise the benefit they can receive from these services and other complimentary programs. And at other times you will sit and listen to their concerns, joys and experiences, knowing that being heard, and having someone to share recovery with is therapeutic.
Qualifications
  • We are seeking applicants who hold qualifications in Mental Health or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, OR equivalent training (minimum two years) and/or lived experience
  • Are deeply passionate about supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community
  • Have a client-focused approach, with strong advocacy skills to ensure clients’ needs are met and positive outcomes are achieved
  • Understand relevant legislation and policy frameworks surrounding Aboriginal health and wellbeing
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families, and communities
  • Proficiency in computer software including electronic medical software and the Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional development including the sharing of knowledge, information and skills with work colleagues
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and history, knowledge of current issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal people and a willingness to incorporate Aboriginal values into clinical practice
  • Hold a valid driver’s licence and are willing to complete the required Police and WWC checks

The person in this role will be resourced with strong training and ongoing support
