Job summary

Interior Health is seeking a term-specific, full-time Advisor, Health, Safety & Prevention to lead and advance workplace health and safety across IH facilities in the Kelowna region.

The role involves guiding compliance with WorkSafeBC, developing safety policies, and delivering training, while partnering with JOHSCs and leadership to embed a culture of safety and wellbeing across the organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in health-related and/or occupational health and safety discipline.
• Five to seven years of healthcare experience with change management and large-scale change.
• Knowledge of violence prevention and ergonomics in the workplace.

Responsibilities

• Lead WHS program development and regulatory compliance.

Interior Health is hiring a term-specific, full-time Advisor, Health, Safety & Prevention who is passionate about making a difference in healthcare. The end date of this position is approximately April 02, 2028, or return of incumbent.

Location

This position is located on-site at Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna, BC.

The salary range for this position is $76,111 (min) to $95,138 (midpoint) to $109,409 (max) per annum, based on 1.0 FTE. Interior Health typically establishes salaries within the minimum and midpoint of the salary range based on qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.

How will you create an impact

The Advisor, Health, Safety, and Prevention participates as a key member of the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) and provides advice, guidance, and resources in the development, implementation, sustainability, evaluation, and continuous improvement of an integrated system-based approach for all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs and practices in IH. In addition, the Advisor provides support, guidance, resources, and training to facilitate organizational compliance with legislated occupational health and safety requirements to protect and improve the quality of work life balance and healthcare in IH.

A key priority of the role is working with key partners to build and sustain a systemic framework that links all aspects of patient, staff, and public safety into a comprehensive cultural vision aligned with the strategic directions of the Health Authority.

What will you work on

• Responsible for managing and ensuring that all deadlines, priorities, and work expectations outlined in the WHS Prevention Advisor Standard of Work are effectively met.
• Provides guidance and support to assigned site leadership by interpreting applicable legislation, supporting the implementation and sustainability of the Health and Safety Management System, and contributing to related organizational priorities.
• Develops positive working relationships and collaborative partnerships with internal and external groups, including Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSCs) and WorkSafeBC, to support the development of a coordinated and sustainable approach to occupational health and safety for those who work within and access Interior Health services.
• Uses a Health and Safety Management System framework to support the adoption of a systems-based approach to fostering a culture of physical and psychological health that extends beyond regulatory compliance.
• Provides guidance and support to individuals and teams across the organization regarding their roles and responsibilities within the Internal Responsibility System and applicable occupational health and safety legislation.
• Supports leaders and managers in aligning operational plans with organizational health and safety priorities, values, and strategic objectives.
• In the context of the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS), provides guidance and support to help the organization meet and exceed regulatory compliance requirements by:
  • Coaching and supporting leaders, managers, human resources teams, and other relevant team members during the implementation of occupational health and safety programs and regulatory requirements.
  • Participating in the development of policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety by interpreting WorkSafeBC and other legislative requirements, researching leading practices, analyzing trends and data, and developing tools, guidelines, and educational resources to support implementation across Interior Health.
  • Developing and providing reports as requested.
• Provides technical occupational health and safety advice and guidance to managers regarding the interpretation of regulations, application of safety procedures and standards, appropriate interventions, and preventative measures.
• Monitors and audits workplace safety activities to identify trends and provide recommendations that help address unsafe or hazardous conditions and processes.
• Supports site leadership with:
  • Occupational health and safety training requirements.
  • WorkSafeBC inspections, directives, and orders.
  • Development of quality Notice of Compliance responses.
  • WorkSafeBC High Risk Strategy initiatives.
  • Monitoring and tracking completion of compliance agreement action items.
  • Corporate annual occupational health and safety program requirements.
• Coordinates, supports, and evaluates the delivery of occupational health and safety education and training for employees, site leads, managers, and supervisors.
• Supports Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSCs) in fulfilling regulatory requirements.
• Ensures completion of hazard identification and risk assessments (e.g., violence prevention, safe patient handling, first aid, biological hazards).
• Monitors, audits, and evaluates the effectiveness of occupational health and safety programs and reports findings to WHS Leadership.
• In alignment with IH’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, employees shall adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times and attend all required training. Employees are responsible to report any identified hazards, unsafe conditions or incidents to the manager or supervisor immediately.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualfications

Education, Training and Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in a health-related and/or occupational health and safety discipline.
• Five to seven years of recent, related experience working in a healthcare environment, including, change management, quality improvement experience, and experience with largescale organizational change efforts.
• Demonstrated knowledge related to prevention of violence in the workplace and ergonomics.
• Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities

• This position allows flexible work options at home, but a majority of the time per week you will need to travel and provide direct support at sites in the region you are assigned and may include overnight stay and travel when request.
• Working knowledge of BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and the Workers Compensation Act.
