Overview
We are hiring two (2) Full-Time, Temporary (up to 24 months) Advisor, Health and Safety Field with the EPCOR Commercial Services team. This position will work from various locations in the Edmonton area. This is an excellent opportunity for a team-oriented individual with an interest in fostering EPCOR stakeholder relations, including health and safety, project management, and operations.
The Advisor, Health and Safety Field is accountable to the Manager, Embedded Engineering and has practical hands-on field experience demonstrating focus on contractor management, including responding to and investigating incidents, visiting contractor work sites to ensure alignment with health and safety requirements, and working with contractors to implement proactive measures. The ideal candidate will take initiatives and make decisions within defined accountabilities, and will work with contractors to help EPCOR manage operational risk.
What you’d be responsible for
- Providing support to all levels of management, project management, and employees to facilitate the implementation and administration of EPCOR’s Contractor Management Standard and Procedure and to attain compliance with applicable legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Providing health and safety consultation and assisting in project / work site health and safety monitoring activities, such as worker observation, work site inspections, risk assessments, hazard analyses, and incident investigations.
- Conducting health and safety audits of the contractor’s health and safety management system against EPCOR health, safety and environment requirements.
- Liaising with contractors during in-progress work to verify compliance with applicable legislation and EPCOR requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Providing inputs to the development of health and safety performance measures while working regularly at field-based work sites.
- Providing interpretation and application of health and safety rules, regulations, and legislation to management, project management, employees, and contractors.
- Coaching and advising employees / contractors on methods to improve health and safety performance.
What’s required to be successful
- Completion of post-secondary education (certificate, diploma, or degree) in Health, Safety & Environment or a related field.
- A recognized professional designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is required; candidates actively pursuing a designation may be considered if they demonstrate progress toward completion.
- Internal Auditor certification is considered an asset.
- 5+ years of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) experience.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulatory requirements and applicable legislation.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis, audits, and creating / delivering training materials.
- Experience liaising with contractors and with a wide variety of key stakeholders.
- Knowledge / experience with auditing tools, including the Alberta Partnerships Certificate of Recognition, and ISO 14001.
- Must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License; clean driving record; ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver’s permit. A Driver’s Abstract may be required at the time of hire. We are not accepting drivers with a GDL license.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health, safety and incident management systems.
- Understanding and application of health, safety and environment performance metrics and analytics.
- Knowledge / experience with project management, risk analysis and the development of mitigation strategies.
- Ability to develop, coordinate and manage multiple job requests and projects.
- Able to understand and anticipate specific business drivers and influence, facilitate and participate in the development and implementation of health and safety plans, goals and objectives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and employee relations skills.
- Adept use of Microsoft Office suites – Word, Outlook and Excel.
- Demonstrable high performance and discipline; a safety advocate, accountable, focused, innovative and results-oriented.
