Applications are invited for the position of Part Time Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Specialist in the Research & Innovation Division, at The Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre located at the Welland Campus. The salary for this position will be $47.54-$60.32 per hour for a 24-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.

WAMIC supports manufacturers in automotive, aerospace, agri-food, and machinery manufacturing with a range of metrology services; mechanical, electronic and mechatronic design; and adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. Learn more at https://www.ncinnovation.ca/wamic.

Reporting to the Associate Director, WAMIC, the successful candidate will revel in producing and testing prototypes, evaluating new technologies, and developing new or improved manufacturing processes for small- and medium-sized businesses. The successful candidate must also enjoy guiding and mentoring young engineers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Applied research/projects

  • Lead scoping/feasibility assessment of potential projects
  • Develop work plans in collaboration with industry partners
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for applied research projects in collaboration with Centre staff, and industry partners
  • Supervise/mentor Research Associates (students) and Research Assistants (graduates)
  • Assist with identifying equipment, material and supply needs
  • Review, revise and approve Assistants’ and Associates’ final project reports

Other

  • Work with Research & Innovation Dissemination and Outreach team to identify dissemination opportunities
  • Assist in identifying outreach and conference opportunities. Attend events and promote Niagara College’s applied research capabilities
  • Participate in interviews for Research Assistant and Associate applicants

Working conditions

  • 24 Hours per week within Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required
  • Research workshop/laboratory and office work
  • Some travel to industry partner premises
  • Reading text and documents and continuous computer use

Qualifications:

  • A three (3) year college diploma or degree in electrical, mechanical or mechatronic engineering or engineering technology
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience
  • P.Eng or CET an asset
  • Previous progressive industrial experience and demonstrated ability in the required field
  • Strong exposure to advanced product development, plus leadership through all phases of the product development lifecycle, would be highly desirable
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions and deadlines
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail, and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to present to and interact with groups of varying technical expertise
  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills when evaluating project opportunities outside of formal experience
  • Capable of working independently while leading collaborative teams
  • Uncompromised commitment to confidentiality
  • Understanding of the manufacturing industry environment in the Niagara Region is an asset
