Job summary

Alberta Health Services in Medicine Hat is seeking an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) to assess emergency scenes, transport patients, and provide high-level patient care using ALS techniques. You will lead the ALS team during transport or at scenes, ensuring readiness of ambulances and equipment in accordance with established standards.

The role requires physical fitness to endure demanding conditions, travel to remote locations, and flexibility across days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Qualifications

• Non-restricted ACP registration with Alberta College of Paramedics.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) CPR certification.
• Valid Class 4 Alberta operator licence with 5-year driving abstract, within 6 months and ≤6 demerits.
• Proof of successful completion of the F.A.R.E. test (certificate via Lifemark) if not currently in a clinical position.
• FARE test must be completed within 6 months prior to offer date.
• Qualified to perform full operational duties as of start date.

Job description

As an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), you will assess emergency scenes and patients and may transport ill or injured individuals from emergency scenes and between facilities. This includes operating ambulances or other modes of transportation. You will provide patient care by administering medications, using advanced life support (ALS) airway adjuncts, and delivering electrical therapy. You may also lead the ALS team in providing clinical care during patient transport or at emergency scenes. You will support the readiness of vehicles by ensuring ambulances and other transport units, including non-emergent transport (NET) vehicles, are properly stocked, maintained, and equipped in accordance with established standards. The working environment for an ACP is demanding and includes exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, moving traffic, and industrial and agricultural equipment. You will be required to travel in all weather conditions and to remote locations (e.g., backcountry), with exposure to hazardous and graphic scenes and direct exposure to bodily fluids. This role is also physically demanding. You must be able to endure frequent lifting and carrying of up to 105 lbs while transporting and transferring patients, supplies, and equipment. You must be able to endure frequent simultaneous kneeling and trunk flexion for extended periods. Additionally, you must stand and sit for extended periods, as well as bend, twist, side-carry up to 20 lbs in each hand, and assume awkward positions.

Required Qualifications

• Non-restricted registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACoP) as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP).
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) CPR certification.
• Must hold a valid Class 4 Alberta Operator's Licence, or equivalent, and provide a five (5)-year driver abstract, current within six (6) months and with no more than six (6) demerits, prior to commencing work.
• Proof of successful completion of the Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, verified by a certificate provided by Lifemark, is required for applicants who do not already hold a clinical position (VESST, Clinical Educator, EMR, PCP, ACP, or Community Paramedic).
• The F.A.R.E. test must be completed no more than six (6) months prior to the date of the job offer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Preference is given to those with previous EMS experience in a metro, suburban, rural, or interfacility environment and in other areas of Health Care and Public Safety.
• Completion of additional post-secondary programs is considered an asset.
