This team is responsible for maximizing plant margins and operating stability by delivering Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions using PACE (Platform for Advanced Control and Estimation) software across the Scotford facilities.

In this role, you will deploy new APC strategies and maintain existing applications. This requires highly technical and detailed work, including business case development, process variable identification, modeling, control system configuration, fluent documentation, and operator training.

The position requires close collaboration with peer groups, including Production, Process Engineering, Business, Instrumentation, and Maintenance. It also necessitates maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging best practices in APC monitoring, maintenance, and improvement methods.

Accountabilities:

  • Design and implement APC using PACE software. Some applications reside in AVEVA/Schneider BOSS.
  • Modify the Distributed Control Systems (DCS) as needed. Control Systems include Schneider Foxboro IA and Honeywell Experion PKS.
  • Identify unit operation constraints and determine cost-effective solutions.
  • Provide daily monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of APC to achieve maximum benefits.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support to operations for complex process and control issues.
  • Design, modify, and tune base layer controls relevant to APC and Advanced Applications.
  • Mentor junior Engineers and other stakeholders.
  • Incorporate relevant APC and Advanced Application information into operating procedures.
  • Work closely with the Production team, including Instrumentation, to maintain unit performance.
  • Provide control input to capital project development.
  • Responsible for Operator training for APC and Advanced Applications, such as estimators.
  • Support AVEVA ROMeo RTO applications as back-up to RTO Engineer.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than the current employer.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Advanced Process Control is an advantage.
  • Eligible for APEGA Professional Engineer accreditation.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Advanced Process Control experience in the oil & gas and/or chemical industries.
  • Foxboro IA or/and Honeywell PKS experience is required.
  • Hands-on experience with Model-Based Predictive Controls.
  • Proficiency in PACE specifically is an advantage.
  • Experience with front line support of Operations.
  • Experience with control strategy downloads to a live (plant running) DCS.
  • OPC Technology awareness.
  • Blending Controls awareness such as Blending Optimization Software Suite (AVEVA BOSS) is an advantage.
