JC Legal Inc. is a law firm based in Iqaluit, Nunavut, now expanding its operations to Québec. Having served over 300 clients including individuals, small businesses, law firms, and public organizations, our firm offers general legal services primarily in real estate law, estates, tax, civil litigation, labour law, contracts, and wills. We are proud to be the only bilingual law firm with a physical presence in Nunavut and are planning to open an office in Brossard in October 2025.

We are seeking a dynamic, resourceful, and motivated individual who wants to make a difference in the community to join our team as a Legal Assistant.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative and Organizational Support

  • Manage the lawyer’s calendar : scheduling appointments, tracking deadlines, and organizing daily priorities.
  • Coordinate travel and accommodation for work-related travel and court hearings.
  • Assist with task organization and general office operations.

Client Service

  • Greet and interact with clients professionally (in person, by phone, and by email).
  • Manage incoming calls and inquiries, appointment confirmations, cancellations, and client satisfaction.
  • Deliver an outstanding client service experience with empathy and professionalism.
  • Writing and Translation

  • Draft and format letters, emails, legal correspondence, and internal documents.
  • Proofread and ensure documents meet professional standards.
  • Translate texts between English and French as needed.
  • Legal Support

  • Assist in note-taking during client consultations and court hearings.
  • Manage client files : file opening, updating, closing, and archiving.
  • Help prepare legal documents and support case management.
  • Basic Accounting

  • Receive payments and manage payment agreements.
  • Issue invoices, process refunds, and handle receivables and payables.
  • Qualifications

  • Fluency in French and English (spoken and written) is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and autonomy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and client service orientation.
  • Proficiency with office software (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
  • Willingness to learn and ability to manage a diverse workload.
  • Cultural sensitivity and openness to reconciliation with First Nations Peoples are considered assets.
  • Frequent travel required between Whitehorse, Montreal and Iqaluit, and occasionally other locations in Canada (travel, accommodation and travel allowance covered by employer).
  • May be called upon to assist in electoral duties as the lawyer also acts as Returning Officer in federal and municipal elections.
  • The employee will be expected to take the territorial Department of Justice exams to be appointed as a Notary Public under territorial laws.
  • The selected candidate will be required to undergo a criminal background and credit check as a condition of employment. These verifications are essential to ensure the integrity and confidentiality required for working in a legal environment.
  • 3 to 4 weeks of paid vacation annually, in addition to statutory holidays.
  • Two paid 15-minute breaks per day.
  • Occasional paid overtime.
  • Full extended health, dental, and travel insurance coverage after the probation period.
  • Complimentary annual personal tax filing and advice.
