Job summary

A community health organization in London, Ontario is seeking a full-time Support Worker to assist individuals facing mental health challenges and housing stability issues. Every person in our community has the right to safe, affordable, quality housing and to live with dignity and as much independence and choice as possible.

As a member of the Supportive Housing team, you will be supporting individuals who may experience addictions and/or mental health concerns and have struggled with housing stability. Your team will be at the ready to provide early support and intervention, when clients need it most. By supporting clients in our supportive living apartments and through outreach in the larger community, you'll help prevent concerns from escalating to a point that would have resulted in eviction, accomplishing our goal of keeping our clients housed.

Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months. Interested applicants who reside in the City of London and are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 2 weeks to be processed and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:

  • What you’ll be making: Starting rate for this role is $27.14 per hour (Level 1 – Direct Service), with a wage differential, based on regulation ($30.01 per hour for Level 1 – Direct Service, Regulated):
    • Successful candidates who are registered with one of the designated professional colleges (e.g. OCSWSSW, CNO, COTO, CRPO, CPSO, or CPO) will receive the wage differential for regulation
    • Successful external applicants will start at Level 1, with grid progression based on seniority up to Level 8 ($34.41 per hour for non-regulated, and $37.26 per hour for regulated)
    • For internal applicants, grid level placement will occur as per the Collective Agreement
  • When you'll work - 70 hours over two-week period, Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
  • What your benefits will be - 9% in lieu of benefits
  • Your pension plan - Eligible for Immediate enrolment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP)

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

  • Work with clients and help motivate/support them to work towards achievement of their goals
  • Champion each client’s capacity for independent community living
  • Assist clients to maintain suitable housing
  • Facilitate and implement resident meetings
  • Provide health teaching about addiction, mental illness and symptom management
  • Crisis intervention and prevention
  • Assist and coach clients in the learning and management/achievement of activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, daily chores, budgeting, socialization etc
  • Advocate for and support clients in accessing community resources
  • Documentation related to clients
  • Ensure effective communication with Director, Managers, staff team, and external treatment teams concerning each participant’s progress
  • Identify, promote resolution, and management of all emergency situations concerning participants, staff, and property
  • Make decisions both independently and collaboratively

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO APPLY:

  • University/college degree or diploma in social science, or a related field (Primary proof of credentials will be required during the hiring process, i.e. original degree/diploma/certificate or official transcript)
  • Current Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle
  • Current, clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Ability to attend work regularly

We prefer the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
  • Experience working in the addiction and mental health field
  • Experience working residence setting
  • Health and safety knowledge; knowledge of safe food handling procedures
  • Crisis intervention and prevention
  • Applied Suicide Interventions Skills and Training (ASIST)
  • First Aid & CPR
