Actuarial Technical Leader (Senior Associate) – Retirement & Health Benefits

Join our Global Actuarial Services Delivery (GSD Canada) team at Mercer as an Actuarial Technical Leader (Senior Associate) in Retirement & Health Benefits. This hybrid role is based in Toronto or Montreal, requiring at least three days a week in the office.

Our Wealth Consulting Business integrates Retirement and Investment services to develop holistic financial wellness solutions, while the Health Consulting Business supports employers with medical, dental, life, and disability plans. The GSD Canada team provides analytical services that enhance consistency, quality, and efficiency across Wealth and Health sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead, delegate, and review analysis and client projects, acting as the technical leader.
  • Guide and coach actuarial analysts and specialists.
  • Create and monitor project work plans, timelines, and budgets.
  • Perform actuarial valuations for retirement and post-retirement benefits, including data validation, gain/loss analysis, and report preparation.
  • Handle year-end accounting disclosures and expense projections under IFRS, CPA, and FAS standards.
  • Complete benefit calculations, review plan documents, and prepare employee benefit statements and government forms.
  • Participate in designing and pricing client pension plans and benefits, including cash flow modeling and liability evaluation.
  • Produce experience studies to refine assumptions used in valuations.
  • Develop strategies to manage pension plan volatility, including funding and risk transfer solutions.
  • Collaborate with professionals across offices to address modern actuarial challenges in Canadian retirement benefits, including union negotiations and policy issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in pension or post-retirement benefits, preferably in consulting.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Excel and MS Office.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Curiosity and eagerness to develop new skills.
  • Team-oriented with flexibility to meet deadlines and client needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Attributes:
