Job summary

New-Vista-Society-3 is seeking an activity aide to create, plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic programs for residents under the Recreation Manager's direction. You will encourage participation and tailor activities to each resident's needs and interests.

Responsibilities include leading groups, assisting with meals, guiding volunteers, maintaining records, and coordinating with multiple departments to ensure a safe, engaging environment for seniors.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 education is required.
• College diploma in Recreation, Leisure studies, Gerontology or equivalent is required.
• 2 years experience in facilities or related field or equivalent.
• Food Safe Certificate.
• Ability to speak, read and understand English fluently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Physically able to carry out the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for day-to-day planning, organization and implementation of meaningful programs such as exercises, crafts and entertainment in collaboration with the Recreation Manager.
• Ensure residents participate in identified recreational activities to meet goals of the resident's recreational treatment plan; lead and motivate residents.
• Carry out resident activity programs; set up equipment; teach techniques; oversee participation and report changes to supervisor.
• Provide assistance with meal service to residents.
• Guide volunteers and demonstrate related techniques as required.
• Maintain inventory of equipment and identify supply needs; transport materials as required.
• Maintain department records including assessments, care plans, participation and attendance.
• Communicate professionally with facility departments, residents, families and volunteers.
• Report hazards, accidents, and faulty equipment to Recreation Manager or designate.
• Promote, monitor, and respond to resident issues.

Job description

Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, the activity aide creates, plans, implements and evaluates a wide variety of creative therapeutic programs with residents to meet their social, physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual needs. Encourages resident participation in individual and group recreational activities related to their assessed needs, ability and interests.

Typical Duties:

1. Responsible for the day-to-day for the planning, organization and implementation of meaningful programs such as exercises, crafts and entertainment for the residents in collaboration with the Recreation Manager

2. Ensures that every resident is involved in identified recreational activities in order to meet the goals of the resident's recreational treatment plan. Leads, instructs, and motivates residents in individual and group leisure pursuits.

3. Carries out resident activity programs. Sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for the activity. Teaches techniques of related activities to residents. Oversees residents involved by encouraging participation and reports any problems and/or changes to supervisor.

4. Provides assistance with meal service to residents.

5. Provides guidance to volunteers and demonstrates related techniques as required.

6. Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and identifies supply needs to appropriate staff. Transports a variety of supplies and/or materials as required.

7. Maintains appropriate department records including assessments, care plans, details of participation and attendance level and progress within the recreation program.

8. Effective and professional communication skills with all facility departments, residents, families and volunteers.

9. Reports hazards, unusual occurrences, accidents, and unsafe or faulty equipment/furniture to the Recreation Manager or designate

10. Promotes, monitors, and responds to Resident issues.

11. Coordinates and Porters Residents during Activities and teach them the techniques of the related activity.

12. Attends in-service training and workshops as required by the employer.

13. Supports the NVS Model of Service, Mission, Vision and Values.

Skills and Abilities

• Grade 12 education
• College diploma in Recreation, Leisure studies, Gerontology or equivalent is required
• 2 years experience working in facilities or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• An energetic, compassionate person who enjoys working with the elderly.
• Food Safe Certificate
