Job description

Reporting to the Activation Supervisor, the Activity Aide must participate in enhancing the resident’s quality of life using a resident-driven approach. The incumbent must assess, deliver and evaluate age-appropriate recreational and educational programs according to the abilities, strengths, needs, interests and former lifestyles of the residents.

Main Duties:

  • Support the Resident Advocacy Program through the promotion and respect of the Resident’s Bill of Rights.
  • Utilize horticulture to promote socialization, movement, relaxation and creative expression.
  • Assist with residents’ participation in the horticulture program and so that it becomes integrated into the everyday lives of the residents.
  • Encourage family members to participate with the residents whenever possible.
  • Facilitate contact with the residents’ former community/faith groups.
  • Provide grief and bereavement support to residents and their families by arranging spiritual counseling and one-on-one visitation according to residents’ wishes.
  • Invite and encourage appropriate cultural musical groups from the community to participate in the Home.
  • Plan and arrange snoezelen programs for residents who need stimulation activities in a culturally specific environment, focusing on various senses, feeling and memory space.
  • Motivate residents to actively participate in activity programs offered.
  • Review the progress of the residents with other staff or family members on a regular basis.
  • Assist therapists in the provision of care in assigned areas.
  • Provide exercises to strengthen muscles and develop endurance to prepare a resident for ambulation with or without the use of assistive devices.
  • Assist residents in the use of restorative aids for ambulation, including cane, walker, or crutches.
  • Guide and support residents in the use of ambulatory aides used on the bed to safely move or change positions including side rails, foot brace, trapeze.

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related field from a recognized Community College or University.
  • Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR (HCP) level.
  • Experience working with seniors and providing programs.
  • Understanding of the Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • Bilingual in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) preferred
