Job summary

AgeCare is seeking a Recreation Worker to plan, develop, and run meaningful recreation and leisure activities that promote wellbeing, purpose, creativity, and community for residents.

You will support activities in the home and community, maintain engaging spaces, and communicate with residents, families, volunteers, and agencies. The role emphasizes observation, documentation, and ongoing program evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with seniors, preferably in long-term care.
  • Graduate diploma/degree in recreation and leisure studies or related field.
  • Enrollment in a program with intent to complete within three years of hire.
  • Alternative: health-care related degree with recreation/leisure experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and runs a variety of meaningful recreation and leisure pursuits.
  • Promotes resident wellbeing, purpose, creativity, and community.
  • Assists in creating engaging spaces/environments for resident activity.
  • Maintains communications with residents, families, volunteers, and community groups.

The Opportunity:

The Recreation Worker plans, develops, and runs a variety of meaningful recreation and leisure pursuits which promotes wellbeing, purpose, creativity, a sense of community, lifelong learning, and fun.

The Recreation Worker facilitates planned and spontaneous opportunities to support the maintenance and development of resident skills and knowledge as well as the development of relationships and personal connections.

What Is In It For You:

  • Assists in development, planning and implementing daily recreation and leisure activities, both in the home and in the community, using a collection of holistic resident information and choices, and in a manner that reflects AgeCare’s philosophy and approach to resident programming.

  • Assists in creating and maintaining engaging spaces/environments in the home that support meaningful resident activity and participation.

  • Develops and maintains good communications with residents and their families, friends, as well as volunteers, community groups and agencies.

  • Observes, reports and documents as required, any changes in the resident’s ability to participate in activities, updating plan of care as appropriate.

  • Supports all departments in their efforts to foster resident engagement in meaningful ways.

  • Models the way, leading programs in a manner that supports and maximizes residents’ skills and abilities.

  • Participates in the on-going evaluation of the recreation program and related quality improvement processes.

What You Will Need:

  • Prior experience working with seniors, preferably in a long-term care setting.

  • Graduate of a post-secondary diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation or other related field from a community college or university.

  • Enrolled in a community college or university in a diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, or other related field with the intent to successfully complete the program within three years of being hired.

OR

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a health care related field and demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in providing recreation and leisure services in a health care setting including:

Salary: $23.17 per hour
