Job summary

The Family Centre of Northern Alberta is seeking an experienced Accounting Specialist to manage accounts payable and receivable, perform reconciliations, and support the finance team in a not-for-profit environment.

You will ensure accurate coding, timely processing of invoices and payments, and assist with month-end processes while upholding internal controls and ethical standards. This full-time role is office-based and offers robust benefits and ongoing training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of full-cycle accounting experience (AP/AR).
  • Experience with reconciliations and month-end close is required.
  • Knowledge of Canadian GAAP and ASNPO is preferred.

  • Process vendor invoices, expenses, and payment requests with proper coding.

Job description

The Family Centre is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Accounting Specialist with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. What you will be doing:

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Accounting Specialist supports the day-to-day financial operations of The Family Centre with a focus on accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, in addition to performing reconciliations, variance analysis, and assisting with special projects within the finance department. The Accounting Specialist plays a vital role in the financial administration of our ohpikîhakan Foster Care program, which includes supporting and educating caregivers on expense requirements as well as liaising with program leadership.

This is a full-time, permanent position of 36.5 hours per week and is based in office.

  • Performing day-to-day financial transactions, including verifying, computing, classifying, coding, and posting invoices and payments
  • Preparing monthly invoices and backup for multiple service contracts based on purchase order, customer requirements, and contract terms
  • Processing and recording vendor invoices, employee expenses, and payment requests, ensuring proper coding and authorization
  • Developing a working understanding of various funding contract requirements, including funding structures, program budgets, provincial caregiver reimbursement guidelines, foster caregiver per diem rates, and applicable reporting requirements related to invoicing
  • Researching and responding to inquiries from customers, vendors, caregivers, or internal stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Maintaining vendor, customer, and service contract billing information
  • Following up on A/R and A/P Aging balances on a monthly basis
  • Preparing and processing journal entries to ensure proper recording of all transactions
  • Assisting in month-end and year-end closing processes, including accruals and reconciliations
  • Updating accounting procedure manuals; maintaining organized and accurate documentation and files
  • Supporting with other administrative needs as they arise to ensure we are successful in achieving department and organization goals

What you will bring to the role:

  • Degree in Accounting, Business or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-cycle accounting experience working in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and performing detailed reconciliations
  • Experience running a full-cycle payroll is considered an asset
  • Solid understanding of financial and management accounting principles in accordance with Canadian GAAP and ASNPO
  • Advanced skill in Microsoft Excel and Google applications (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets) with adaptability to learn new software and applications as required
  • High aptitude for navigating multiple segregated systems with proficiency in using accounting systems
  • Experience using Sage Intacct or SAP Ariba systems are considered assets
  • High EQ and a fearlessly empathetic approach to collaboration
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit, charitable, or human services organization is considered an asset

  • Police Information Check (completed within the last 6 months)
  • Child Intervention Records Check (completed within the last 6 months)
