A municipal government in Ontario is seeking an experienced accountant to oversee key accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree, extensive experience in a centralized accounting environment, and expertise in HST legislation. Responsibilities include month-end procedures, liaising with local boards on financial matters, and training staff on accounting systems. Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, this person will be responsible for administering many of the key accounting functions performed by Finance. These include journal entries, G/L integrity, reconciliations, HST filing, financial statement and financial information return preparation, and liaising with local boards on their accounting issues.
This position provides accounting expertise, analytical services, internal control system expertise, system training and HST tax advice as it relates to transactions for all departments and local boards.
Job Responsibilities:• Completion of a Master’s degree or completion of a university degree plus two years of graduate work or completion of university degree plus a professional accreditation in Accounting, Auditing, or a related field. Education should be in the Accounting or Business field.
• Must have 5 to 7 years’ experience in a centralized accounting environment, preferably in a municipality.
• Must be comfortable with HST legislation and practices.
• Must possess strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of accounting principles and be able to apply these to day-to-day operations.
• Must be comfortable working with a centralized accounting or ERP system; must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel.
• Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively, professionally and diplomatically with staff, local boards and auditors.
