Job summary

The Law Society of Alberta is seeking an Accountant to join the Accounting department. You will prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end financial information for The Law Society, ALIA, and CPLED, working closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting.

Success requires strong attention to detail, solid financial reporting knowledge, and effective organization and communication skills within a collaborative team environment. Overtime may be required during peak periods.

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting skills with a minimum of three years of related financial reporting and accounting experience.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently to organize and prioritize duties to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Business Central is considered an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Demonstrated excellence in attention to detail while maintaining a big picture perspective.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work in and promote a strong team environment.
  • Desire for growth and capability to meet additional requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting to perform a variety of accounting tasks.
  • Complete month-end working papers and prepare financial reporting for assigned entity or entities.
  • Record capital assets and leases accurately.
  • Prepare reconciliations and analyses including deferred revenue, intercompany funds, prepaids and accrued liabilities.
  • Monthly reconciliation of investments and unrealized gains.
  • Ensure investment asset mix guidelines are maintained.
  • Assist with documentation and analysis for external auditors.
  • Review accounts payable invoices for proper coding and approval.
  • Prepare journal entries and data entry as required.
  • Complete assigned tasks and projects in a professional and timely manner.
  • Provide guidance and support to Accounting Assistants and AP/AR functions.
  • Support managers with financial reporting requests and sound information.
  • Prepare GST returns and other forms as required.
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned.

Job description

The Law Society of Alberta (Law Society) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.

In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Accounting department provides the Boards of Directors (the Benchers), Committees (Audit and Finance), management and all business units with timely, accurate and meaningful financial information and advice to support effective strategic and operational decision making. The department is responsible for the accounting records of three distinct but related entities: The Law Society, the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association (ALIA), and the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED).

The Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting in the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting information to meet the financial information needs of all stakeholders. This includes the accounting records of all three entities.

Success in this position requires excellent attention to detail, sound knowledge of financial reporting, and effective organizational and communication skills.

Key Accountabilities:

As a member of the Accounting team, you will:

  • Work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting to perform a variety of accounting tasks
