Rubicon Strategy Inc., based in Ottawa, is seeking a government relations consultant with passion for politics to join our team. You will report to the Executive Vice President & Ottawa Practice Lead and collaborate with the CEO, partners and consultants on strategy and advocacy for client files.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in government, politics, campaigns, or consulting.
  • Eligible to register as a Consultant Lobbyist with the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada.
  • Experience in strategic communications, issues management, and stakeholder management.
  • French language skills are an asset.
  • Strong understanding of federal or provincial government decision-making and regulatory processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage designated client files with weekly reporting to the client and liaising with the client teams.
  • Develop short- and long-term political strategy including stakeholder mapping and policy analysis.
  • Undertake lobbying activities to influence legislation and public policy.
  • Prepare for meetings with government officials and client teams; create background materials and briefing notes.
  • Monitor government policies and political developments affecting clients.
  • Build and maintain relationships with political staff and public servants.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for account management of designated client files with weekly reporting to the client and liaising with the client team.
  • Assessing options for the client's political strategy and relationships.
  • Developing short- and long-term political strategy development for client objectives, including stakeholder mapping, program research and evaluation, and policy analysis. Some examples include c reating comprehensive government relations and advocacy planning projects with detailed strategic outreach and engagement plans.
  • Undertake direct lobbying activities to advocate for and influence legislation, regulations, and public policies that affect our clients and their interests.
  • Planning and preparing for meetings and interactions with government and clients, and working with the consulting team to prepare background materials, briefing notes, and miscellaneous collateral.
  • Keeping abreast of all relevant government and industry policies and political developments with a keen eye on potential impacts to our clients.
  • Fostering and maintaining positive and professional relationships with your political staff contacts and public servants.
  • Incorporate networking with the current sitting government into your day-to-day activities in a manner that promotes the reputation of the firm.
  • Assisting in the preparation of new business proposals
  • Working with the consulting team to develop briefing notes and various collateral for clients.
  • Ensuring compliance with all rules and regulations for lobbyists as set out by the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
  • A minimum of three to five years of previous experience working in government, politics, campaigns, or with a consulting firm.
  • Eligible candidates must be qualified to register as a Consultant Lobbyist with the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada without restrictions, such as a lobby ban.
  • Extensive experience in strategic communications, issues management, complex problem-solving, and stakeholder management.
  • Proficiency in French is considered an asset.
  • Advanced understanding of the federal or provincial government’s decision-making and regulatory processes and functions.
  • Strong communications skills including presentation skills and the ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills including strategic process management, maximizing workflow, and identifying opportunities for synergy and integration.
  • Experience in and understanding of managing sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, multiple social media and AI platforms effectively, while respecting confidentiality and our corporate policies.
