Job description

Academic Support Workers (DMS, LHHS, GMES)

The Academic Support Worker will provide dedicated support to First Nations students at DMS/GNMES/LHHS, ensuring their academic needs are met while promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. The role involves collaborating with classroom teachers and the school’s ESS Team to deliver individualized academic support and implement tailored educational plans.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Cultural Promotion:
  • Promote awareness and appreciation of First Nations culture in activities and interactions.
  • Act as a positive role model and advocate for students ensuring their cultural perspectives are respected and integrated into their learning experience.
  • Academic Support:
  • Provide academic support as required and identified by classroom teachers and the ESS Team.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to maintain consistency in work ethic, coursework, and classroom/school expectations for students.
  • Follow the support schedule for identified students as outlined by ESS Team
  • Implement academic plans and interventions as developed by the school-based ESS Team and/or classroom teachers.
  • Facilitate the individual programming of the Personalized Learning Plan for the assigned First Nations students.
  • Share regular updates on student progress with the school-based ESS Team and classroom teachers where applicable.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Maintain open and positive communication with school-based staff to foster a collaborative approach to student support.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained both inside and outside of the school setting.
  • Communicate with the school principal and ESS Team regarding any issues affecting the academic progress of First Nations students.
  • Supervision and Extra-Curricular Support:
  • Supervise assigned students during extra-curricular times such as lunch and recess, as defined in collaboration with the ESS team.
  • Ensure a positive and supportive environment during these periods, although this responsibility is separate from the school’s regular duty rotation.
  • Professional Development and Meetings:
  • Participate in staff meetings, ESS Team meetings (as requested), and relevant professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive learning environment for assigned students by performing other duties as assigned.
  • This position may require occasional participation in after-school activities or events.
  • On-the-job training and professional development opportunities are provided.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Must provide a clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
  • Understanding of Disability, Inclusion and cultural sensitivity
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, and virtual learning environments)
  • Good academic skills (Strong note-taking, written communication, and organizational skills)
  • Ability to interact sensitively and professionally with students, academic staff, and disability services

Terms of Employment:

  • 30 hours per week
  • From September 7 th , 2025 until the end of the 2026 school year with an opportunity to be rehired in the fall of 2026 for the 2026/27 academic school year.
  • Between $24.60 to $33.70 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
