About the Role:

Reporting to the Chair, Department of Sociology & Criminology, the Academic Support Facilitator enhances student retention and success by collaborating with faculty and departmental staff to provide support for students facing various challenges. The incumben t is responsible f or scheduling make-up tests and exams for students requiring accommodations, tracking their needs, and linking them to appropriate resources. The incumbent assists student s seeki ng curricular and co-curricular experiential learning opportunities. The Academic Support Facil itator als o facilitat es communication between students and instructors, ensuring a supportive learning environment that promotes academic achievement.

The Academic Support Facilitator will:

  • Assist students in navigating academic challenges and provide guidance on available resources;

  • Track and document students requiring accommodations and their individual circumstances;

  • Schedule and supervise make-up tests and exams, ensuring a fair and supportive environment;

  • Coordinate necessary materials for make-up tests and exams, such as scripts and scantron forms;

  • Facilitate communication between students and instructors regarding academic needs;

  • Provide one-on-one support to students facing personal or accessibility challenges;

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student engagement and retention;

  • Monitor student progress and follow up on their academic performance;

  • Prepare and distribute announcements and communications to students regarding important information and resources;

  • Collaborate with instructors to identify students in need of additional support;

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment through effective communication;

  • Participate in departmental and subcommittee meetings to discuss student needs and retention strategies;

  • Track curricular and co-curricular experiential education offerings and guide students to suitable opportunities;

  • Assist the department in documenting, reporting and showcasing experiential learning opportunities;

  • Work with instructors of courses featuring experiential learning (e.g., 2F90, 4P00, 4P01, 4P03) to support students facing accessibility challenges related to experiential learning .

Key S kills and Experience :

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline (e.g., Social Sciences). The equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;

  • Experience in an academic support role, student advising, or a related area;

  • Strong understanding of student development theories and retention strategies;

  • Proficiency in using technology and software for tracking student progress and communication;

  • Familiar with the accessibility resources and accommodations for students;.

  • Promotes and embodies inclusiveness and respect within the workplace and the broader community;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion;

  • Empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by students;

  • Ability to facilitate workshops and group discussions;

  • Commitment to promoting an inclusive and supportive educational environment;

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically in challenging situations .

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade J , Salary Scale ( $ 56,503-$91,627 );

  • Target Hiring Salary : $ 56,503 ; pro-rated to reflect part time hours.

  • T his is a permanent , part time position that includes :
