Hourly Pay Rate: $42.56 (start-rate) – 49.34 (4-year rate)

Hours per week: 35 hours per week

Status: Full-Time

Located in Barrie and reporting to the Associate Dean, Health, Wellness and Sciences the incumbent is responsible for supporting the HWS Science programs including Biotechnology, Medical Lab Technology and Pre-Health, ensuring appropriate design, maintenance, repair, inventory control, and replacement of equipment and resources. In addition, the incumbent advises / assists faculty and students through demonstration and orientation of technical information and processes, technical reports, applied research and the set-up and use of a variety of highly specialized equipment.

The incumbent represents Health, Wellness and Sciences and conducts technical tours and is a resource for information about the department and its equipment for business partners, potential partners and potential students. The incumbent is also responsible for all documentation and requirements by accrediting bodies such as the Public Health Agency of Canada including licensure.

Specific Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

Technical Support

  • Research and integrate new software and system
  • Document routine maintenance performed on all laboratory equipment for the programs
  • Develop, maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all Laboratory Equipment for the programs
  • Acquire specimens as needed to support delivery of curriculum
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain a wide range of lab equipment, including CBC and Chemistry analyzers, tissue processors, embedding stations, microtomes, hematology analyzers, urinalysis analyzers etc.
  • Design, research, fabricate and test new equipment as required
  • Locate and order parts, replacement stock, and new equipment
  • Lead assigned departmental capital equipment purchases and lab layout, location of installation and service requirements
  • Ensure all lab safety standards are being followed (e.g. CSA approved and meets all safety legislative requirements)
  • Set up and maintain equipment and supplies in the Medical Laboratory Assistant and Technologist labs and other facilities as assigned
  • Monitor and give technical support to student or part time staff as required

Support Academic Programs

  • Assist students with technical reports, applied research and in setting up and performing labs
  • Demonstrate and orient students to the operation of existing and new equipment and proper work procedures
  • Work closely with students on course related technical questions and assignments when faculty is not available
  • Design, develop, and deliver equipment demonstrations for labs and tour groups - elementary aged to industrial representatives
  • Orienting and demonstrating to new faculty the use and operation of labs, lab equipment and experiments.
  • Support program and department goals and attend required meetings

All Other Duties As Required

  • Includes, but not limited to maintaining up-to-date inventory lists and budgets related to lab resources.
  • Collaborating with, and supporting, HWS program teams to ensure labs meet PHAC licensure requirements, Regulatory and Accreditation requirements
  • Works on special projects

Qualifications

  • Successfully completed a four-year post-secondary degree in Science (BSc.) or Biotechnology or Successfully completed at least a 3 Year Advanced Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology & registration with CMLTO
  • Experience providing technical support in a setting where duties included: maintaining technical equipment, providing technical support, and demonstrating and training others on the use of equipment
  • Experience training and demonstrating skills to others
  • Experience in Biology or Medical Lab Technology which includes working in a Biosafety Level 2 Lab with cell cultures, microbiology, electrocardiograms, venipuncture, capillary specimen collection and handling, urinalysis, serology tests and/or in Chemistry working with a variety of modes of spectrophotometry and chromatography and other analytical techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety rules and regulations which includes knowledge of appropriate safety practices with regards to the handling and storing of pathogens or toxins
  • Knowledge of:
    • HPTA, HPTR, and any other applicable federal or provincial legislation
    • applicable biosafety and biosecurity policies, standards, and practices appropriate to the risk associated with the controlled activities being conducted
  • TDGA class 6 training would be considered an asset
  • Computer skills and experience using the MS Office Suite
  • Communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
