Duties And Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, the Academic and Public Programs Specialist (APPS) is responsible for visioning, leading, designing, and delivering public and academic programs at Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG). The APPS also manages key communications activities.

Qualifications

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of trends, best practices, ethics, and standards of care in art education in Canada.
  • Thorough knowledge of the contemporary art scene in Canada, including artists, trends, protocols, ideas, issues, and gallery practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of evolving approaches to designing and delivering art-based public and academic programs in university art galleries and other public art institutions.
  • Thorough understanding of the university environment and campus pedagogical and communication activities.
  • Ability to build relationships and identify shared priorities with partners in civic and campus communities, fostering reciprocal and respectful collaboration.
  • Ability to independently create high-quality programs and communication campaigns, demonstrating creativity, initiative, reliability, judgment, and professionalism.
  • Skill in designing and managing complex projects and campaigns, requiring excellent time management, organization, writing, and administrative skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to collaborate effectively with diverse community members.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, social media platforms, and website content management software.
Education And Experience

Typically acquired through:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in art history, museum studies, fine arts, or a related field.
  • At least three years of continuous experience in a university or public art gallery, with a proven record in leading, designing, and delivering art programs and communications campaigns.
  • Preference for experience in a post-secondary setting.
