UNYA has been supporting the health and wellbeing of Indigenous youth in the Metro Vancouver area for over 30 years. As a respected non-profit, charitable organization, we recognize Indigenous youth as experts in their own lives and strive to provide youth with programs and opportunities that are relevant and meaningful to them.

At Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA), we have developed a Philosophy of Care foundation, drawing from best practices. Highlights of this opportunity :

As members of the Aboriginal Youth Safehouse program, the Residential Child and Youth Workers support youth in identifying their individual needs and setting positive goals for the future. The 24-hour program provides stabilization care and temporary housing for youth without a safe space. The position focuses on each youth’s strengths and supports them to obtain housing, employment, education, training, life skills, and address issues like substance use, mental health, and physical health. This position reports directly to the Program Manager and maintains flexible scheduling, as the program operates 24/7. Shifts include 07:00-15:00, 08:00-16:00, 15:00-23:00, 16:00-00:00, 23:00-07:00, and 00:00-08:00.

Contribute to a team dedicated to increasing stabilization, belonging, and empowerment for youth.

Qualifications and Conditions :

  • Educational experience required (e.g., Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in a relevant field, 2 years of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience)
  • Experience working with the Indigenous community, with good knowledge of Vancouver’s community resources, especially youth and Indigenous-specific resources
  • Understanding of the family and social issues faced by Indigenous youth today, including the impacts of the residential school system
  • Ability to adhere to the organization’s mandate, policies, and procedures
  • Criminal record check completed and satisfactory to UNYA
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
  • Priority given to qualified Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit candidates, as per section 41 of the Human Rights Code
  • Vehicle, driving abstract, and first aid requirements (if relevant)
  • Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Being a positive role model, working cooperatively, supervising youth, and ensuring safety
  • Establishing rapport and developing relationships with youth and professionals
  • Care planning, advocacy, intervention strategies, and on-site support
  • Recording information (paper records, Sharevision, Excel, etc.)
  • Fostering stabilization, belonging, and empowerment for youth, and creating a positive workplace
  • Supporting youth with mental health and substance use issues
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Programs / CEO
  • What we offer :

  • Salary: $23.66 per hour
  • On-Call Relief position with shifts from 07:00-15:00, 08:00-16:00, 15:00-23:00, 16:00-00:00, 23:00-07:00, and 00:00-08:00
  • Program runs 24/7 with double staffing for each shift
