Description

TheAlberta Neuroscience (ABNeuro)in theCumming School of Medicineinvites applications for aTeam Lead. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Alberta Neuroscience (ABNeuro) (Previously Campus Alberta Neuroscience (CAN)) was established by the Alberta neuroscience community in 2012 with support from the Government of Alberta to accelerate understanding of the brain, improve brain health through collaboration, develop the province as a centre of neuroscience excellence, and improve quality of life in Alberta and beyond.

When ABNeuro was founded, the goal was to connect the Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI), Lethbridge’s Canadian Centre for Behavioral Neuroscience (CCBN), and Edmonton’s Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI). Since then, we have expanded beyond our 3 founding partner universities to all the universities, colleges, and polytechnics in Alberta who are involved in Neuroscience and Mental Health research and innovation.

This position is provincial in scope, reports to the Chair of the ABNeuro Advisory Committee, and can be based anywhere in Albera. The ABNeuro Lead is responsible for the successful leadership, overall management, and operations of ABNeuro and its diverse initiatives, including in computational neuroscience, pain, opioids and cannabis, healthy brain aging and dementia, MS, spinal cord injury, mental health, and neuroimaging. This requires working closely with a multitude of high-level stakeholders in academia, including faculty, students, and staff of three universities, affiliated government bodies, healthcare, industry, and the community to realize the vision of ABNeuro.

This role can be based anywhere in Alberta and is eligible for the UofC Hybrid program.

Summary of Key Responsibilities ( job functions include but are not limited to ) :

Business Development :

• Accountable to and reporting to the Chair of the Alberta Neuroscience Advisory Committee
• Responsible for ensuring that the accountabilities and responsibilities of ABNeuro are met with an oversight and management structure that is efficient and represents and protects the interests of participants, sponsors and stakeholders
• Responsible for the creation and management of a diverse team that may be stationed across all institutions (i.e. satellite offices)
• Fiscally responsible for an annual operating revenue of up to $5 M through fundraising initiatives, leveraging strategies, government grants, and all other potential funding opportunities
• Responsible for the development and updating of the initiative’s strategic plan to align the capabilities, needs and shared objectives of neuroscience research and education, healthcare providers and the community across Alberta
• Responsible for developing and executing a business case that secures ABNeuro’s future, including the pursuit of stable provincial funding through direct engagement with government ministries, alignment with policy priorities, and evidence-informed impact reporting
• Responsible for fostering and maintaining excellent relationships with the neuroscience communities at the University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, and other stakeholder groups such AHS and Alberta Innovates

Management :

• Support and lead the operations team required to fully implement ABNeuro’s objectives
• Responsible for a diverse team of program and project managers, coordinators, finance and funding personnel, and administration
• Successfully develop and implement plans for realizing business objectives with full managerial discretion over direct reports
• This position will be a budget owner and will have full authority for managing operational budgets
• Fiscally accountable to the executive strategy committee
• Required to submit an annual accountability reports to all funders. The report will also require an outline of activities of the ABNeuro program
• Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff, including assessing staffing needs, creating job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of operational staff, performing annual performance reviews and, when required, performing disciplinary, including terminations, actions

Project Management :

• Lead the ABNeuro program in the production of tangible results by guiding the implementation of infrastructure that is required to support project development, knowledge creation and knowledge application; and delivering on all current areas
• Act as a liaison and engage with various stakeholders on behalf of ABNeuro projects
• Ensure full oversight is maintained on the proper disposition and use of funds that support ABNeuro
• Protect the ABNeuro program from risks

Qualifications / Requirements :

• Significant previous managerial experience (5-7 years) in a senior level role; knowledge and skills in leading teams, organizational management, strategic planning and fiscal responsibility
• A sound understanding of University, Health Services and Government structure and operations
• Demonstrated leadership skills and management experience
• Demonstrated success in the management of diverse complex projects with multiple stakeholders
• Demonstrated success in engaging with government agencies or ministries to secure funding, align with public health and innovation priorities, and inform policy development
• Significant previous experience in and strong understanding of Alberta’s academic health research environment and stakeholders
• Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Must possess excellent writing skills
• Preference would be for a Master’s or higher level degree
• Experience working in life science innovation and / or experience as an entrepreneur considered an asset
• Familiarity with neurosciences, mental health, and healthy brain and dementia considered an asset
• Proven experience in grant writing, securing funding, and managing grants, including monitoring, evaluation, and reporting is considered an asset
