We currently have an opportunity for a temporary part-time AAC Technician to join our Teams in the Communications Technology Clinic. This is a temporary role until December 2025.

How AAC Technician support our teams at Grand River Hospital:

The Communication Technology Clinic provides assistive technology including hardware and peripherals, software and mounting to assist clients in meeting their daily communication needs. The Technician is responsible for providing technical input and consultation to clinic team members; support and training for clients, facilitators and staff; installation of equipment and software; shipping and receiving of equipment; and maintenance of client and clinic equipment and devices or computers.

This is an opportunity to work directly with patients and their caregivers and to be part of a dynamic team of professionals working toward the goal of applying advanced technology to achieve independent communication. You will be valued for bringing your ideas and creativity to a team to solve complex problems.

Responsibilities Include

  • Participates in assessments of clients and demonstrates options that are recommended by the clinician.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose repairs on computers and electronic devices
  • Collaborates with clinicians and clients regarding the mounting of devices on wheelchairs
  • Maintains knowledge of current augmentative communication technology practices and equipment
  • Maintains a resource network including technicians in other augmentative and alternative communication clinics and product vendors
  • Comfortable working with non-speaking and/or physically challenged individuals
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the job including lifting/carrying of devices and mounting, set up of equipment on stands or wheelchairs and use of tools for these purposes
  • High level of competence and comfort working with computers including word processing, internet access, installation of software and peripherals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and having a trouble-shooting, creative and resourceful, problem solving mindset
  • Consistently meets service and administrative deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, with both verbal and non-verbal clients, families, facilitators and caregivers and other stakeholders to ensure the optimal delivery of service for every client
  • Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

At Grand River Hospital, AAC Technician Has

  • Familiarity with current Augmentative and Alternative Communication hardware and software and experience programming and customizing these systems
  • Experience working in a clinical environment with patients having both acquired and congenital communication disorders
  • Familiarity with Windows and Macintosh, iOS and Android systems
  • Teaching/training experience with adults
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and establish priorities
  • A reliable vehicle is required and valid driver license
