Position Description

The Geneva School is a mission-driven school established in 1993. Our mission is to provide

Hired by and subject to the supervision of the Director of the Rhetoric School (grades 9 -12), the
9th Grade English Teacher is an exempt position. The teacher, in a formational and relational role,
models Christ-like behavior within The Geneva School community as he or she studies, re-
imagines, and teaches within the Christian, liberal arts tradition.

We have a full-time opening for a 9th Grade English Teacher for the 2025-2026 School Year.

Essential Duties

The Geneva School English teacher instructs students in language arts, including literature,
writing, grammar, and critical thinking in order to develop communication and analytic skills.
Responsibilities include developing lesson plans, assessing student progress, and fostering a
positive learning environment.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

• Classroom Instruction and Planning: Develop and deliver engaging lessons on literature, writing skills, and grammar, aligned with curriculum standards.
• Assessment and Feedback:Regularly assessing student understanding and progress througha variety of methods, including tests (assessments), quizzes, homework, and presentations.Providing constructive feedback in order to improve student understanding and mastery ofthe language arts material. Tracking student progress and identifying areas where studentsmay need additional support.
• Classroom Environment:Maintaining a positive and productive learning environment.Addressing student behavior issues in accordance with the school’s policies and practices.Skillfully managing a classroom of high school students with varying academic skills.
• Communication:Providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regardingstudent performance. Posting grades and assignments in a timely manner and correspondingor conversing regularly with student’s parents regarding student progress or concerns.
• Collaboration:Participating in faculty meetings and collaborative planning sessions.

Personal Profile

Required Skills and Experience:

• Proficiency in English: Deep understanding of the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, and rhetoric. Able to convey concepts clearly and engagingly while tailoring the language level to suit the needs of students.
• Conversant in the Classical Canon:The course begins with Virgil’s Aeneid and turns totales of Northern European mythology, followed by Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the GreenKnight, Sir Orfeo, Dante’s Divine Comedy—Inferno, excerpts from The Canterbury Tales,and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
• Excellent communication skills:Ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, both verballyand in writing.
• Teaching experience:Proven ability to effectively deliver lessons and engage high schoolstudents in active learning.
• Classroom management:Establish a positive and supportive learning environment thatencourages discussion, questions, and constructive feedback. Utilize effective classroommanagement strategies to maintain student focus and accountability.
• Professional development:Partner with colleagues to share best practices and enhancestudent success.
• Relevant education:Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field from an accreditedinstitution. Master’s degree preferred.
