The Opportunity

We’re looking for someone who can complete Banff Centre training within a prescribed timeframe to attain an Engineer 5th class certification. Financial assistance may be available as per Banff Centre learning agreement guidelines. The ideal candidate will have an interest and aptitude in mechanical systems to join our team of experienced tradespeople.

The 5th class power engineer (Building Operator B) is a key member of the Physical Facilities department, responsible for maintaining campus operations. This role oversees the running and maintenance of pumps, motors, fans, air filters, and other equipment related to heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. Responsibilities include identifying repairs or replacements, maintaining maintenance records, preparing defect reports, sourcing parts, and performing water testing and chemical treatments outside the main plant. Tasks and locations vary daily, requiring prioritization and efficiency.

Specific Accountabilities

  1. Assist in minor repairs, adjustments, and basic plumbing duties.
  2. Perform daily rounds of mechanical rooms, conduct chemical testing, and treat boilers.
  3. Monitor and add chemicals like chlorine and muriatic acid to pool systems following established protocols.
  4. Responsible for preventative, demand, and emergency maintenance of campus-wide pumps, motors, fans, air filters, and related equipment.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Experience in operation and/or maintenance of mechanical equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with knowledge of fans, pumps, motors, etc.
  • Engineer 5th class certification (or willingness to obtain within a prescribed timeframe).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work on ladders or scaffolds.
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License.

Special Requirements

  • Complete Banff Centre training and attain 5th class certification; financial assistance may be available.
  • Must be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule including weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits

  • This is a unionized, permanent, salaried support staff position under CUPE 4318, subject to a 6-month probation.
  • Annual salary ranges from $43,056 to $52,299, based on experience and certifications, for a 37.5-hour workweek.
