Position Overview:

As a 4th Class Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective operation of our vessels. This full-time, year-round position is based from the ports of Saint John, NB and Digby, NS.

Reporting directly to the Engineer of the Watch, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and cleanliness of all machinery and equipment aboard the vessel. This role demands a commitment to safety, operational excellence, and teamwork, contributing to the overall success of Bay Ferries Limited’s operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance, inspections, and overhaul of machinery as directed by the Second Engineer or the Chief Engineer.
  • Perform watches in Engine Control Room or Engine Room as directed by 2nd Engineer or Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain and update company planned maintenance system.
  • Understand and adhere to pollution regulations.
  • Update and maintain logbooks, maintenance records, oil record book, and spares inventory.
  • Supervise and delegate work to Oilers on their watch.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Muster List, emergency duties, Vessel Emergency Plan, and SMS training manual.
  • Understand and adhere to Company policies including the uniform policy, the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Policy, Smoke Free Workplace Policy, Pet Policy, and Collective Agreements.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Valid Certificate of Competency as a 4th Class Engineer.
  • Valid Seafarers Medical Certificate and all other relevant certificates required to maintain CoC.
  • Working knowledge of critical operations and SMS documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven track record of safe operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with passenger services (an asset).
  • Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status is required for positions in Canada.
