Senior 3D Artist & UI / UX Designer — VR (Unreal Engine 5)
Location : Victoria, British Columbia / Hybrid
Reports to : Creative Director
Type : Full-time
Compensation : $65 000 CAD + early-employee ownership option
Why We Need You
We’re a small, fast-moving studio building a stylised, high-energy VR title in Unreal Engine 5. Every person we hire shapes the final experience—and the company itself. Alongside equity / revenue-share upside, you’ll help us :
- craft low-poly, clean-topology models optimised for stereo rendering;
- design reach-and-grab UI that feels native in-headset;
- selectively leverage AI-assisted tools (procedural modelling, generative texturing, blueprint copilots) to speed up iteration—never as a crutch, always as an accelerator;
- jump into UE5 to profile, light, script and polish until the scene sings.
What You’ll Do: 3D Asset Creation & Integration
- Build game-ready environments and props in Blender (or similar).
- Generate UVs, LODs, light-map UVs and lightweight colliders.
- Export to UE5, validate scale, pivots, material assignments and Nanite / HLOD setup.
- Experiment with AI workflows—e.g., generating concept thumbnails or base textures—then refine by hand to meet our art style.
UI / UX & Blueprint Implementation
- Design VR-legible HUDs, icons and diegetic panels.
- Author widget blueprints (UMG) and hook up interactions for hand-tracking or controller pointers.
- Iterate via headset play-tests, applying comfort heuristics (text size, safe zones, snap turns).
- Prototype layouts quickly using AI design assistants when useful, while keeping final decisions user-tested and artist-led.
Technical Art & Performance
- Profile scenes with Unreal Insights; fix draw-call and overdraw issues; script importer tools if needed.
- Tune materials, merge instanced meshes, and batch-generate LODs to hold a stable 90 FPS.
Lighting, VFX & Shaders
- Own Niagara particles, baked + stationary lighting passes, and lightweight Material Graph / HLSL shaders for mobile-class GPUs.
Cross-Platform VR Readiness
- Balance texture budgets (ASTC 6×6), poly limits and feature toggles across Quest 3 and PCVR SKUs.
Pipeline & Source Control
- Use Perforce (or Git-LFS) for large binaries, set up pre-commit checks, and keep naming tidy.
Optional Specialisms
- Control Rig skinning & animation exports.
- Concept-art paint-overs & marketing key-art.
- Photogrammetry cleanup, Houdini procedural asset creation.
What You Bring
- 4+ years creating assets and/or UI for shipped games or XR experiences.
- Portfolio showing stylised 3D models and functional UI mock-ups.
- Fluency in Blender or Maya, Substance tools, Photoshop / Illustrator.
- Hands-on Unreal Engine 5 experience: importing assets, setting up materials, building widget blueprints.
- Strong optimisation mindset—poly counts, texture memory, draw calls are second nature.
- Self-management—you can take a feature from brief to headset demo without micromanagement.
- Collaborative attitude—comfortable giving / receiving feedback across art, design, and engineering.
- Comfort with AI-assisted workflows: you know when they save time, when they introduce risk, and how to keep the human creative vision in control.
Bonus Points
- Shipped VR title on Quest, PS VR 2, or PCVR.
- Control Rig, Niagara VFX, or HLSL shader chops.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards & motion-sickness mitigation in VR.
What We Offer
