Job description

Note: This posting is not entry-level - we require the applicant to have recent experience working as an electrical apprentice.

As a 309-A Electrician Apprentice, you will work under a licensed electrician's supervision, installing and repairing complex electrical wiring, power distribution and lighting systems, working from technical blueprints. You will work on projects predominantly within the commercial sector, which can include the construction or renovations of mid-rise & high-rise apartment buildings, restaurants, retirement homes, schools, condominiums, etc.

The work will primarily be in the Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas.

This hands-on position requires a confident individual with strong technical aptitude, a commitment to safety, and a dedication to excellence. You must be able to learn quickly and retain knowledge, asking good questions that help you become more skilled and keep you safe.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Always represent Kraun with professionalism and consistently demonstrate SPARK values
  • Install wiring, conduits, raceways, cables, light fixtures, switches, receptacles, smoke detectors, brackets, boxes and other electrical components
  • Install & energize equipment related to power distribution, such as panels, circuits, transformers, relays, etc.
  • Install/connect mechanical systems, fire alarms, nurse calls, emergency lighting and generators, etc.
  • Install according to project documentation such as specifications, contracts and written scopes of work
  • Read and interpret drawings, circuit diagrams and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layouts for new or existing installations
  • Test continuity of circuits to ensure safety and correct installation
  • Adhere to safety protocols, guidelines and best practices to minimize and eliminate the risk of accidents and ensure a safe working environment or oneself and others
  • Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of tools and equipment, ensuring Company-provided tools are organized and stored securely to maximize efficiency and minimize loss/theft
  • Monitor material quantities and order through appropriate channels
  • Supervise & train others as required
  • Complete tasks and assignments within the set measurables/goals
  • Comply with all company policies and comply with ESA, including no performing electrical work outside of Kraun Electric
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 309-A Electrician (Construction & Maintenance) Apprenticeship Contract in Good Standing with Skilled Trades Ontario
  • Ontario G License in Good Standing - must provide a clean 3-year Drivers' Abstract
  • Must pass a background screening, which includes reference checks and the provision of a clean criminal reference check

Preferred Skills

  • Experience as an electrician apprentice in new & existing industrial, commercial and/or institutional sectors
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and best practices
  • Excellent critical thinking and solution-oriented
  • Able to work well on a team
  • Able to work within a schedule-driven environment, with the ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Able to speak English
  • Well-organized & reliable
  • Able to read electrical drawings, specifications and related equipment instruction manuals

Working Environment & Physical Demands

Working conditions include but are not limited to:

  • Outdoor Work: You will be required to work outdoors, where you will be exposed to various weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Height: The job will involve working at heights, such as climbing ladders and scaffolds or working on elevated platforms.
  • Confined Spaces: You must work in tight and confined spaces such as crawl spaces, attics, or utility tunnels.
  • Lifting and Carrying: The position will require lifting, carrying, and pulling heavy items and equipment weighing over 50 pounds, such as conduit, wiring, tools, and machinery.
  • Uneven Terrain: Electricians may need to navigate and work on uneven terrain, including construction sites, unfinished buildings, and outdoor landscapes.
  • Physical Demands: The job involves physical exertion and stamina to perform tasks such as bending, stooping, kneeling, standing, and walking flights of stairs for extended periods.
  • Noise and Vibrations: The work environment will involve exposure to loud noises from machinery and equipment and vibrations from power tools and heavy machinery.
  • Safety Gear: Compliance with safety protocols and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots is mandatory.
  • Flexible Schedule: Depending on project deadlines and client requirements, the job may require working evenings, weekends, or overtime.
  • Teamwork: Collaboration with other individuals, including team members, contractors, and project managers, is essential and requires effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Travel: Some projects may require travel to different job sites, which may involve longer drives.
  • Physical Fitness: Good physical health and fitness are necessary to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Adherence to Regulations: Compliance with local building codes, electrical codes, safety regulations, and industry standards is mandatory.
