THE OPPORTUNITY

The UGDSB is seeking a dynamic individual to join our team for a permanent part-time opportunity in the capacity of Educational Assistant - Itinerant.

Location: Itinerant

FTE and Hours: 0.5 FTE = 16.25 hours per week; part-time positions have varying start and end times and may include mornings, afternoons or alternating full days, dependent on the schools and system needs

Hourly Rate of Pay: $30.92 - $36.74 per hour, plus applicable vacation pay in accordance with the ESA; wage rate effective September 1, 2025

Start Date: September 2, 2026

Board Information: 10-month position (yearly from September – June following the school year calendar); permanent; part-time; Educational Student Support Personnel (ESSP) & Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECE) Union

Reporting to the Principal of Special Education and school Principals, the Educational Assistant - Itinerant provides support to students in a variety of school settings based on operational needs. This flexible role may involve daily travel between schools to provide short term coverage, or assignment to a single school for an extended period. Work locations and schedules may fluctuate and are determined by student and school requirements. The Educational Assistant - Itinerant must possess willingness, along with the physical ability, to work with all of our students who have many diverse needs. This role requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to multiple school environments.

Responsibilities
  • Educational Assistants work with students with many diverse needs. This work provides support for the behaviour, safety, medical and physical needs of a student.
  • Duties may include lifting, toileting, positioning and transferring children and equipment and application of BMS.
  • Educational Assistants work with students both individually and/or in a group setting.
  • Flexibility, patience, empathy and the ability to work closely with students with complex needs, classroom teacher, parents and Administration
  • Other duties as assigned
Experience And Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have the following qualifications:

  • Educational Assistant Diploma, and/or a combination of formal education (fields related to the development of children and/or special education) and work experience deemed equivalent by the Board
  • Post-Secondary Degree in a related field of study
  • A valid Behaviour Management Systems certification is required for this position
  • Proven ability and recent experience in working with students with special needs and behavioural disabilities is strongly preferred and school-based experience is a definite asset
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder Training
  • Lifting/Positioning Training
  • Flexibility, patience, empathy and the ability to work closely with students with complex needs, classroom teacher, parents and Administration
  • Candidates must be capable of performing the essential physical duties of the position, such as lifting, positioning and transferring children and equipment and utilizing BMS techniques where required
  • Access to a reliable method of transportation and ability to attend specific schools
