Job summary

Lakeridge Health in Oshawa is seeking two Physician Assistants for the Gynecologic Oncology Program. R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre sees approximately 204,000 visits annually. Approximately 14,000 visits are specifically for gynecology oncology. We currently have an opportunity for two Physician Assistant to join our multidisciplinary team where outstanding, innovative and evidence-based oncologic care is provided to patients with cancer.

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at Lakeridge Health Oshawa as part of the Gynecologic Oncology Program at the Cancer Centre and Department of Surgery and function as a vital part of a collaborative team of physicians, nurses, trainees (residents and fellows) and other allied health professionals participating in the day-to-day management of gynecology oncology patients in the inpatient unit and outpatient clinical setting. This role may also perform surgical first assist duties as needed.

Working with a team of health professionals in an inter-professional collaborative model and under the supervision and/or delegation of a supervising physician (and in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario's policy on delegation) the Physician Assistant will provide quality patient focused care to patients in the Diagnostic Assessment Program under medical directives or direct orders.

The PA will have the opportunity to take part in quality improvement initiatives, policy or clinical pathway development, education, research, health advocacy, professional development, and leadership opportunities throughout their career. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and on an ongoing basis.

Duties

Working under the direction of a supervising Gynecologic Oncologist, the principal responsibilities of the PA may include but are not limited to:

• conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories; performing physical and gynecological examinations and interpreting findings;
• performing certain controlled acts under medical directives delegated to you by a physician
• formulate treatment plans and support appropriate connections to consultants, allied health, outpatient clinics and support any other services/special needs for the patient;
• management of symptoms and treatment-related adverse events; ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic investigations; providing medical orders and prescriptions;
• assisting with patient admission, discharge and follow-up;
• patient counseling relating to diagnosis which might include sexual health
• Perform as first assist or similar support to Gynecologic Oncologist during surgical procedures
• provide patient education and counselling on their treatment plan including written instructions where appropriate
• act as a clinical and information resource to the team including nursing, clerical, residents, medical students, and other members
• maintain clear, accurate and appropriate records of the patient encounter
• reassessments, management plan including plan and patient instructions
• support handling any patient care related telephone calls participate in rounds, conferences and education sessions as required
• perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Qualifications

• Registration in good standing as a Physician Assistant with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario;
• Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.
• Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
• Prior experience performing in first assist in surgical procedures
• 2 years of oncology experience preferred including systemic treatment
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
• Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
• Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
• Flexible with superior organization skills and the ability to work efficiently to prioritize multiple, competing tasks in a fast-paced and dynamic environment with minimal supervision
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, make decisions, solve problems and take initiative while working with confidential patient information
• Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
