Job summary

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a Trades Supervisor – Electromechanical to lead skilled and semi-skilled staff in electrical and mechanical maintenance, repair, and project work. You will supervise, guide, and review contractor activities, ensuring work is completed safely and in line with regulations and city standards.

Responsibilities include scheduling, inspections, liaising with stakeholders, and maintaining accurate records while supporting municipal facilities and infrastructure,

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 with electrical trade apprenticeship.
  • BC Certificate of Qualification – Red Seal (Electrician).
  • Field Safety Representative – Class A.
  • Class 5 Driver’s Licence (BC).
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Provide technical guidance, on-the-job training, and hands-on support.
  • Prepare maintenance and project schedules, monitor progress, inspect work and ensure compliance with standards and safety procedures.

  • Investigate public complaints, respond to service issues and emergency calls, and initiate corrective action.
  • Liaise with staff, the public, utility companies, consultants, contractors, engineers, and external agencies on technical matters.
  • Maintain records and reports, requisition materials, and support maintenance of municipal facilities and infrastructure.
  • Ensure electrical installation and permit requirements meet Safety Standards Act and Electrical Safety Regulation.

TRADES SUPERVISOR - ELECTROMECHANICAL
POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Trades Supervisor – Electromechanical plans, assigns, supervises, reviews, and participates as required in the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled staff engaged in technical servicing, repair, maintenance, construction, and related electrical and mechanical work. The position exercises considerable independence of judgement and action within established departmental policies, standards, and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable legislation, standards, specifications, operating permits, and City requirements. Difficult technical issues, policy matters, and financial considerations are referred to a superior, who reviews work performance based on results achieved and technical accuracy.

What You’ll Do:
  • Supervise, assign, review, and evaluate the work of skilled trades staff, support workers, and contractors engaged in electrical and mechanical maintenance, repair, construction, and servicing work.
  • Provide technical guidance, on-the-job training, and hands-on support as required.
  • Prepare maintenance and project schedules, monitor progress, inspect work, and ensure compliance with City standards, specifications, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractor work, including reviewing invoices, change orders, and payment claims for accuracy.
  • Investigate public complaints, respond to service issues and emergency calls, and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Liaise with staff, the public, utility companies, consultants, contractors, engineers, and external agencies on technical and operational matters.
  • Maintain operational records and reports, requisition materials, and support the ongoing maintenance of municipal facilities and infrastructure, including pump stations, reservoirs, traffic signals, street lighting, and telecommunications sites.
  • Ensure electrical installation and operating permit requirements are met in accordance with the Safety Standards Act and Electrical Safety Regulation.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment applicable to the trades and related work supervised.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures related to the servicing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work performed.

Ability to plan, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled subordinates and with economy and efficiency in the use of time, equipment and materials.

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, manuals, blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other materials related to the work.

Ability to prepare designs and drawings, cost estimates, reports, records and other materials related to the work and order equipment and materials.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts, to coordinate work with others, provide advice, and resolve issues related to the work.

Skill in the care and use of tools, machinery and equipment used in the work.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work and completion of a recognized electrical trade apprenticeship, plus considerable related experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Licences And Certificates
  • B.C. Certificate of Qualification – Red Seal (Electrician).
  • Field Safety Representative (FSR) – Certificate of Qualification – Class A (Unrestricted).
  • Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia
