The salary scale for Professional Support 3 is based on steps that range from $68,917.73 - $91,624.25. New Professional Support may receive up to a maximum of seven steps for relevant occupational experience which is $80,254.49 annually.

This is a designated position, open only to candidates from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree. Student Affairs, Adult Education, Social Science majors would be an asset.
  • You have a minimum of three years (full time equivalent) of recent and relevant occupational experience in student services supporting students and prospective students or supporting adults in personal, academic, and/or career development.
  • Occupational experience that includes advising in a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset.
  • Preferred occupational experience would include advising students from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who request resources, supports and connections
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, MS Teams, E-mail and PeopleSoft or other student records system.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.

Relevant Skills and Knowledge

  • You are culturally competent and demonstrate a commitment to principles of equity. Knowledge andlived experience working with the 2SLGTBQIA+ community would be considered a strong asset.
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills that enable you to interact with a diversity of people and support resolution of issues
  • You are known for your superior customer service skills and can create a relationship of trust beyond the immediate interaction
  • Your superb team working skills enable you to contribute positively to a team environment
  • You have specific technical occupational knowledge and skill in student advising and career development
  • You are known for your problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • You possess excellent coordination skills specifically related to providing supports and planning events for a large caseload.
  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities specifically related to creating and maintaining student records
  • You demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in the provision of student supports
  • You are dedicated to life-long learning both in regards to emerging technologies that support student services, and evolving practices
Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

  • You will be building early relationships with students to support their transition into the College, provide educational and career advisement during students' time at the College, and support transitioning out to employment.
  • You will help students make decisions, solve problems, and navigate supports and services internal to NSCC, as well as in community.
  • You will be involved in planning and delivering events, activities, and interactions that support student growth, engagement, and leadership.
  • You will be advising students in areas including Career, Enrolment, Finance, Learning, Student Life, and Wellness.
  • You will have accountability for advising students across all campuses, who request specialized supports, resources or connections within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

For example, you will

  • Provide opportunities for students to explore career and employment options
  • Help students learn and make informed decisions regarding college policies, program selection and completion options. Assist students in planning how to meet financial commitments of college
  • Use recreational, cultural, and social events and activities to engage students
  • Refer students to internal learning disability, and counselling supports
  • Refer students to relevant community services and supports

You will be a member of campus and provincial Student Services and Advising teams, which provide a continuum of integrated services and opportunities to students in-person, online, and in blended environments. You will initiate and build partnerships with Academic Chairs and Faculty in order to provide services tailored to the unique needs and opportunities of students and programs.

Additional Information

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a part-time adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.

Candidates selected for interviews will be expected to provide at least three recent, occupational references. The successful candidate will be expected to provide official transcripts to show proof of academic achievements.
