Queen's Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program - Standardized Patients
Standardized Patients (SPs) are trained individuals who convincingly act out specific medical scenarios, imitating physical, historical, and emotional characteristics of patients. They participate in simulated interviews and physical examinations to help medical students improve their communication and practical skills. SPs give feedback on how medical students' actions made them feel from the patient's perspective

Ideal candidates for this role come from diverse backgrounds and demographics, displaying good communication skills, a genuine interest in supporting the education of future family physicians, and having the availability for reasonably flexible part-time hours on Wednesdays. Mature applicants and seniors are welcome to apply.

Rate of Pay: Ranges from $17/hr. to $30/hr. Paid Training ($17/hr.) will be provided to selected Standardized Patients

Duties
" Portray patient roles accurately and consistently, including physical, emotional, and historical aspects, during clinical simulations.
" Participate in simulated medical interviews and physical examinations with students and health professionals.
" Provide constructive, patient-centered feedback to learners based on personal experience of the interaction.
" Maintain character throughout sessions to preserve the integrity of the learning experience.
" Attend scheduled training sessions to learn new roles and practice scenarios.
" Select and commit to simulation sessions based on availability and comfort with scenario type.
" Contribute to interprofessional education sessions, including disciplines such as medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, etc.
" Represent diverse patient populations and experiences to support inclusive and community-responsive medical education.
Knowledge Of
" Basic understanding of the healthcare environment and the role of clinical simulations in medical education.
" Importance of confidentiality, professionalism, and neutrality in a learning environment.
" Goals of medical and health professional education, especially related to communication, physical examination, and professional conduct.
" Requirements and expectations for portraying a clinical case consistently and accurately over multiple sessions.
" The structure and objectives of the Queen's Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program and its community-oriented approach to training future physicians.
Ability To
" Memorize, understand, and accurately portray scripted roles, including patient histories and emotional responses.
" Provide feedback clearly and respectfully, focusing on how interactions made you feel as a "patient."
" Adapt to various learner levels and educational contexts, maintaining a supportive and nonjudgmental demeanor.
" Commit to part-time, flexible scheduling primarily during weekdays (Wednesdays in particular).
" Communicate effectively and professionally with simulation facilitators, students, and staff.
" Maintain reliability and punctuality for scheduled sessions.
" Stay in character during entire simulation interactions, even under pressure or unfamiliar questioning.
" Represent diverse patient identities, including various ages, genders, cultures, and health conditions-both real and simulated.
Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended effective May 1, 2022, but the University may reinstate them at any point.
