Job Title: Therapeutic Recreation Assistant- LTC

Status: Temporary Part Time (12 Month Contract)

Department: AJAX LTC RECREATIONAL THERAPY

Program: Long Term Care

Days, Evenings; 8 Hour Shifts (Subject to Change)

Location: Lakeridge Health Long Term Care AP

Wage Schedule: $34.250 - $36.160 per hour

This position is open to all qualified CUPE staff throughout Lakeridge Health commencing 5 June 2025 and closing at 11:59 pm on 12 June 2025.

Reporting to the Manager of Program Supports, the Therapeutic Recreation Assistant will support the development, delivery, and evaluation of group and individual recreation programs, designed to meet the physical, emotional, mental, and social needs and interests of the residents.

Having opened in March 2022, this new home is part of the government's plan to improve long-term care delivery and capacity in Ontario and Durham Region. This state-of-the-art long-term care home features dining and outdoor spaces on every floor, a large courtyard, onsite diabetes care, and other innovative features.

Just as Lakeridge Health is a community beacon, the new long-term care home will play a key role in meeting the needs of seniors in Durham and Ontario.

The Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Is Responsible For
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating individual and group recreation programs that meet residents' needs and interests.
  • Collaborating with the care team to assess residents' needs, strengths, and abilities.
  • Instructing and supporting residents in various programs, including adaptations for residents with disabilities.
  • Maintaining accurate records of residents' participation in recreation activities.
  • Promoting recreation programs to residents, families, volunteers, and the community to encourage participation.
  • Observing and communicating changes in residents' conditions to the care team.
  • Providing guidance to volunteers and students.
  • Supporting other departments as needed.
  • Adhering to standards set by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and relevant legislation.
Qualifications
  • A post-secondary diploma in Recreation and Leisure, Therapeutic Recreation, or Kinesiology.
  • Experience providing recreation programming to seniors with physical and cognitive impairments.
  • Eligible for registration or a member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario preferred.
  • Experience with geriatrics, cognitive support, palliative care, rehabilitation, and understanding of dementia and responsive behaviors.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a Long-Term Care facility preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills.
  • Excellent report writing and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Must provide a recent satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector.
  • Commitment to inclusion, compassion, innovation, teamwork, and joy.
  • Understanding of and commitment to safety protocols and participation in related training.
Conditions Of Employment

Employment terms follow the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 6364.
