POSITION SUMMARY:

As an integral member of the Occupational Health, Safety & Department, the Abilities Case Management Specialist provides advice and support to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and in the administration of the hospital's Illness, Injury and Abilities/Attendance Policies. The role involves case managing WSIB, short-term and long-term disability, and work accommodation issues to facilitate early and safe return to work.

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, the specialist contributes to an integrated model of health, safety, and employee well-being. This position offers expert advice and guidance to management, staff, unions, and third-party stakeholders on complex disability support, accommodation, and return-to-work cases. Responsibilities include liaising with stakeholders to adjudicate and manage claims, facilitate safe and timely return to work, and support managers on attendance issues, modified work design, and permanent accommodations. The role also involves reviewing illness/injury trends and assisting in grievance processes and mediations/arbitrations as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Degree in a related discipline (e.g., Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resources) preferred.
  • Designations in disability management (or working towards), such as CDMP, RRP, CCRC, CRWC, CVRP, Registered Kinesiologist, Occupational Health Nurse.
  • Significant experience in disability/WSIB management, health & safety, or occupational health, especially in a unionized hospital environment.
  • Experience with workplace health programs and knowledge of external insurance providers preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of legislation related to disability management, attendance, WSIB, return to work, and group benefits within a unionized setting.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety software systems.
  • Extensive experience in facilitating return to work, modified work, and permanent accommodations.
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation (HRC, OHSA, WSIA, PHIPA).
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Attention to detail, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills, exercising tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and claims management software; experience with Parklane preferred.

  • Understanding of and commitment to safety programs and practices, including participation in in-services.
