Job Overview
- Provide technical advice and guidance on a variety of technical matters within designated area of responsibility for hydroelectric stations maintenance, operations, performance, design and commissioning.
- Plan, organize, and conduct inspections, installations, tests, servicing, maintenance, and renovations, necessary for the continuous safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric plant equipment within assigned area of technical expertise and / or systems and equipment.
- Perform assessments, recognize technical deficiencies, recommend remedial measures, prepare and / or co-ordinate design changes for submission and approval as required to remain in compliance with applicable codes and legislative requirements and implement and conduct approved and / or scheduled programs.
- Participate in regular staff meetings convened to plan and organize the work, manpower and overtime requirements. Initiate action to overcome or alleviate emergency or other contingencies. Be responsible for the preparation and submission of technical and other reports.
- As necessary, carry out due diligence related to the documentation approval process and as regulated by licensing regulations and own personal limits of approval.
- Provide technical guidance and be responsible for work quality and production. Develop or assist in developing work methods or procedures including local technical procedures and implement as approved. Ensure the maintenance of adequate records and the preparation of reports.
- Assist in establishing and integrating departmental priorities and resource requirements, developing and implementing an effective compliance monitoring and reporting process for regulatory requirements utilizing computerized work management systems.
- As Single Point of Contact for assigned project work or work programs, support project management activities, co-ordinate necessary inputs from other technical disciplines and carry out due diligence related to appropriate approvals and regulatory requirements. As necessary, prepare investment justifications based on conditions assessments of assigned existing systems and equipment.
- Monitor projects for cost and schedule performance and recommend changes to ensure projects meet stated objectives.
- Arrange and / or oversee contract work. Prepare specifications, assist in the evaluation of tenders, and recommend awarding contracts. Work with suppliers to resolve problems affecting equipment performance, and recommend design changes based on operating experiences. Oversee work performed to ensure conformance to specification, resolving differences related to contract interpretation, and dealing with complaints as required.
- Maintain records for reference and payment. Make other external contacts to arrange for resources, equipment or services.
- Investigate incidents of failure and / or unsatisfactory performance of equipment, material and service. Recommend improvements, review input arising from proposed procedural changes and reconcile conflicting viewpoints from trades and trades supervisory staff, complete design changes and / or corrective measures and implement as approved.
- Maintain close surveillance over equipment noting situations that require action, recognizing impending difficulties, and exercising effective staff control. Report major maintenance requirements to Supervisor, otherwise, determine and take corrective measures necessary.
- Collaborate in studies or investigations conducted under a consortium of design, research, operating groups / utilities and regulatory bodies concerned with the safe efficient and economical production and distribution of power via hydroelectric plants and other facilities, where applicable. Attempt to influence others involved to accept a course of action amidst differing viewpoints related to project objectives / priorities, etc.
- Oversee and assure conformity to safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislative changes and directives governing the work falling within the scope of responsibilities assigned to the Section. Ensure strict adherence to procedures, standing instructions, safety rules, first aid, and resuscitation practice.
- Establish data collection requirements and be responsible for the collection, tabulation and keeping of historical records.
- Prepare detailed estimates for projects and other activities as directed and assist in the preparation of the Section budget and business plans.
- Establish maximum-minimum stock levels for major or capital parts and collaborate in establishing classes and quantities for other items. Prepare specifications for purchase orders for plant material. Assist with managing hazardous materials and wastes and associated records.
- Keep abreast of advances in hydroelectric plant design and development in general and the assigned technical field in particular. Participate in training programs.
Qualifications
Civil Engineering diploma from a PEO accredited University.Current, active, unrestricted, certified, Professional Engineers of Ontario in good standing.Requires experience in a hydroelectric engineering position to be fully conversant with the tests, studies, investigations and other undertakings of an engineering or economic nature related to the commissioning, operation and maintenance of a hydroelectric plant.Requires experience to be familiar with the departmental / Station procedures, policies, contracts involved, interrelationships between organizations and various administrative aspects of the position to facilitate the work function.Ontario Drivers License in good standingAble to travel by aircraft, watercraft to remote locations over long distances (7 hrs one way) on short notice.
