POSITION OVERVIEW:

We’re seeking an Environmental Planner to help shape forward-thinking policies and lead sustainability initiatives that will influence the future of our city.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  1. Prepare studies, recommend bylaw amendments, and develop long-term environmental plans and strategies.
  2. Conduct environmental data collection, on-site inspections, and technical reviews to support policy decisions.
  3. Liaise with municipal staff, government agencies, consultants, and community groups to ensure sustainability goals are met.
  4. Represent the City at intergovernmental forums, provide professional input on environmental issues, and contribute to task forces and committees.
  5. Assess environmental impacts of development proposals and provide expert recommendations to Council and City officials.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in resource management, environmental planning, environmental science or a discipline related to the work with considerable experience in an environmental management environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Qualification as a RP Biologist, and work experience in a planning environment would be an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of environmental management.
  2. Considerable knowledge of the policies, rules, regulations, by-laws, objectives and legislation governing the work performed.
  3. Considerable knowledge of research methods, statistical techniques and of trends and developments in environmental protection.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, professionals and the public; and to transmit clearly the principles and requirements of sound environmental protection practices and to express ideas effectively orally and in written or graphic form.
  5. Ability to perform detailed analytical and research tasks and develop strategies, programs and policy options.
  6. Ability to assess the environmental impact of development upon the Municipality, including conformance with applicable environmental legislation and regulations and draft amendments to the by-laws suitable to the needs of the community as established by Council.
  7. Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in written or graphic form and skill in presentation.
  8. Skill in dealing with politically sensitive topics in a tactful manner.
  9. Ability to work with minimal supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications of this role involves mainly policy related project work that includes reviewing and updating environmental and climate policy and programs, the planning and managing of public engagement processes, updates to various long-range planning strategies, and a minimum of five years of policy planning experience.

Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia and Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred.
