General Job Description:

Under the supervision of the building principal, the registered nurse will provide healthcare for students, including dispensing medications, caring for injuries, and coordinating health prevention activities and wellness programs.

Qualifications:

  1. 1-3 years of pediatric medical experience preferred.
  2. Diploma, Associates, or Bachelors Degree from an accredited nursing program.
  3. Valid Illinois Registered Nurse license from the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations.
  4. CPR certification.
  5. Strong organizational and communication skills, with ability to maintain confidentiality.
  6. Equivalent education and experience considered.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide safety and health information to students and staff; maintain compliance with immunization, health records, vision, and hearing screenings.
  2. Dispense medications per Illinois School Code and district policies; ensure security of controlled substances.
  3. Monitor and provide treatment for students during recovery periods; communicate with parents and physicians.
  4. Be aware of medication side effects and interactions.
  5. Perform medical interventions to promote student independence.
  6. Maintain universal precautions following OSHA guidelines.
  7. Promote wellness programs; distribute informational materials; serve as a medical resource.
  8. Provide first aid and notify paramedics in emergencies.
  9. Develop and update individualized nursing care plans for at-risk students.
  10. Notify parents/staff of communicable diseases.
  11. Provide health education in classrooms as needed.
  12. Coordinate with parents, food service, teachers regarding students' medical needs.
  13. Maintain accident and disease reports and logs.
  14. Attend relevant meetings.
  15. Refer students to healthcare providers as necessary.
  16. Assess students' medical needs.
  17. Collaborate with school staff, district personnel, and outside agencies.
  18. Perform additional duties as assigned by the director and principal.
